Help me oh learned ones, you're my last hope :surrender
I have an ancient lappy that works on XP pro BUT for some reason it just won't let me download anything off the net
It may be slow and that but it only has to stream music from my pc to my hi-fi set up. So can anyone tell my why I get this error report within 5 seconds of ANY download attempt ?

I've done every and all updates the thing has asked for and it says it's running IE8 :nenau

yep he can get into your laptop remotely,(once you give him the go ahead) and sort it out, did mine a while ago, ace guy, Rick

Its almost certainly because its an .exe file, thats an executable, meaning its a program that can run without being extracted first so its probably being blocked....

you may as well be talking Turkish to the likes of me and Pete (makeitfit), Rick

oh I see, its every download. im on the case with you now...!

Internet explorer Pmsl! Get chrome:sly far better:D

Yes I know that but 2 things, first it's a very old slow lappy and chrome is very resource hungry.
Second, now here's the rub, I CAN'T DOWNLOAD ANYTHING :doh
Ta for your input though :thumbs

Hi, sounds TOO obvious have you checked a/ the cable b/ the router, have you moved the router lately, dusting it can dislodge a plug:doh
If you do not have a cable checker use a cable you know works. Some cables have solid wires that break and make contact when it suits them

Go into IE see if the laptop can 'see' the router, usually 192.168.0.1, if that fails RTFM

IAEF contact your ISP tell them the internet is down, they will talk you through it.
good luck
dave
one last thing, when did you last defrag it?

It sees the router and browses tinterweb no probs.
All other lappies and pc working fine with router too.
It's only when trying to download anything it throws up this error message
Just trying awindows update check at the mo :nenau
Defrag, hmmm not done that? I'll try it for a larf :thumbs

I would try a system restore to an earlier date? You may have 'upset' something or installed something that is not compatible or causing conflict.
Start>All programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

I think defragging the hard drive is a good idea, but has nothing to do with your download problem. It will take about 2 days to defrag.

System restore fail
90% free space on hard drive and 2% in I gave that up :lol
It gets very little use and all temp files binned etc

Firefox is a great browser. But obviously if you were able to download using IE.Then i would uninstall IE,and reinstall it,(maybe with a later one)Details on how to do this can be found on Google.I would also check to make sure no virus or Malware is on your machine. If you do have any Virus or Malware, then doing a restore is a waste of time.Unless you no for sure of the restore date/time of a restore point where it would be clean.

Like Clivvy, and others,i too could access your machine remotely. But since i am a relative new member. Then perhaps Clivvy is your best option if you choose that route.
But i would try another browser,it would help to (find eliminate problems)
I never did like IE.
