Have looked at these tyres and thought "they will do nicely" then I started to delve into them and found mixed views all across this forum and the web, was going to fit 235/75/15 on standard alloys as advised by local tyre fitter, question is are they good on the road, as 80% of the time thats what they will be on and also whats the life expectancey if they are used 100% of the time on the road ( in mileage), It seems that its getting harder to get off-road without upsetting some lentil eating, sandal wearing, numpty. Is there a decent alternative as I tow a caravan, and want some decent grip?
Dont want to go down the oversize tyres route as it seems that you need alot of time and experience in altering height etc. Help please as all I want is good advice and a pointer as to what direction to go in. Cheers Monty

31x10.5x15 will go on standard rims with no adjusting the truck... if towing and big road milage.

you need runway enduro a/t they do that size too.

thats what you need. keep away from mud tyres if towing caravans

I was thinking about getting Kuhmo KL71 tyres a couple of years back for my 'Troll. They were out of stock in the size I wanted 265/70 R17, so I would have had to wait for quite a while.

I have heard that the Kumhos are quiet on road for a tyre with such an agressive tread. I did worry though that they might not be so special in the wet on tarmac. The other thing that bothered me is that the tread is directional, so you may have to fit your spare with the tread the wrong way round if you happen to have a flat on the wrong side.

In the end, I bought General Grabber AT2 instead. They have been great so far. They are low noise on tarmac and feel pretty much the same as road tyres in the dry or wet. They're about as good as any All Terrain for greenlaning. They wear a bit quicker than BFG All Terrains - about 5mm wear (leaving about 8mm) in the first 23000 miles on them (so I might get 50000m in total). I had BFGs on a Trooper I used to have and got about 70000m on them.

If you use the motor mainly on tarmac and the rest is greenlaning, I'd be tempted to go for All Terrains rather than the Kuhmos.

Help again sorry

Thanks to all for the prompt reply to this question, its my first time on any forum so please be kind to me and have patience if I ask what seems to be a stupid question/answer, To try and help all out there that wants to help then at the mo I have 235/70/15 on all 4 corners with 2 mastercraft on the front and 2 millenium on the rear, so I assume that whatever I put on will be an improvement as they are down to about 3mm on each BUT have served me well doing 28k since owing the Mav and not so much as a puncture.
Right back on track, Am I right in thinking that the imperial enduro A/T 31x10.5x15 that has been recommended is Ok for not scrubbing wheelarch etc and what would be the consequences to my speedo reading low or high etc. Also are the Enduros recommended any good for extreme greenlaning etc as I do go to farms that have some awful tracks that I need to go up ie 1ft plus ruts
also what are they like on price and are they readily available. Sorry to sound like a complete idiot but dont want to waste money on the wrong tyres as I have other jobs to do on the mav, although I dont mind spending say £350 on tyres if they are the absolute best I can get and afford. Thanks to all again Monty

Tyres

Runway H2 Enduro 265/70 x 16 on my R3mR cost £69 a corner fitted not the fanciest looking tyre but in two years & 15k miles still look like new and not noisy. Plus nice white embossed logo on sides !

the runway enduro a/t's will do anything you want to do with them ... trust me i did most of last year on a set. before i went to bfg muds. id go back to them if i could get the size i require. very nice tyre. great tread pattern, no road noise , great grip on road and track. coped well in rutts and clay. only failed on height and in peat bog. (but so will anything)

Hi I,ve been running on Kumho Road Venture AT since we got the truck, nearly a year ago, found no problems with them and did very well in the snow, we also use our caravan all year round and again found the tyres to be quiet on road and seem to do the job fine, we have covered about 8 thousand miles in quite a short time and can see no sighs of wear so all in all I'm quite happy with them, When I had them fitted last year the cost was £85 per tyre fitted. :thumb2

Thanks for the advice on the Enduro A/T, have just been looking at a website that I got from this forum, Camskill. Obviously isnt as aggresive as the Kumho kl71 but am taking the advice that A/Ts will be better than M/Ts.
I do only tow the caravan abt 3 times a year but suppose thats important as it only needs 1 event to cause me misery. Question is can I really fit 31x10.5x15 on my standard alloys as when I did the conversion it came out at 265/70/15.At the mo the tyres on the mav are 235/70/15. The last thing I want to do is to fit these larger tyres and have grief with touching/rubbing/scrapeing on the inner side of the front wings, and can I also say that "This forum is a mine of information and all the people seem to really give honest opinions not just bull*hit". Oh and by the way does anyone know how to check the correct height that the maverick should stand at on flat ground (figures if you know them)as I want to check that it hasnt had a spring lift as there seems to be a lot of space between the tyre and the wheelarches on both the front and rear. Thanks in advance Monty

Personally i would go for General Tyre Grabber A/T2's as they have the same tread pattern & last almost as long for half the price.!
& go from 195/60R15 uptp 31x12.50R15.!
Only go mud tyres if ya a regular green laner & pay'n'play day person.!
& if ya can get them fitted by a friend or cheap.?

General Grabber AT/2 i had some on my t2 on standard size 235/75x15 awesome.
would have again on troll, unless find something better.

they are like bfg's at around 66% of price, plenty of mud slots in tread without
getting too noisey, and nice chunky shoulders to bite, oh and a rubber protector
for edge of rim, which I believer is unique to general, certainly my tryre fitter was
impressed by them.

I'm running pirelli scorpions on the back (AT pattern) and some General Grabber AT's on the front, never had an issue with lack of grip, on snow, mud or road...... thought about muds but do more road miles than anything else. During the snow, only time I got stuck was in more than 2' deep. My tyre size is 235 75 16.......... mind you, the LSD makes a great difference, leaving standard landrovers behind, even the newer abs controlled systems so well impressed..

Thrown a spanner in the works now chaps.

Firstly, I cant believe the overwhelming response to this question...its brilliant to have experience and honesty, pity the current 3 running for PM didnt take a leaf out of your book chaps Lol
Secondly, Have made me mind up that I definately need A/Ts not M/Ts
but need more clarifaction on tyre size.Without cuting carving and lifting resetting speedos etc whats the biggest tyre I can go to? as previously I have mentioned that there seems a lot of space between wheel and arch and as the fellow who had the car before me towed a caravan I am wondering if he did a small say 1 inch lift at the rear with H.D springs and wound the front up on the torsion bars, as It does have a very small list to the drivers side on the flat, which may well be that he wound 1 torsion bar up more than the other. It looks as though the tyres fitted at the moment are too small for the hole/arch, Please help me someone to find a starting point that I can work from. As for make of tyre choice it seems either enduro or general grabbers at the moment.

Monty its not so much the height thats the issue - you can stick 31x10.5x15s on without raising the truck at all....its the front to back measurement inside the wheel arches thats the restriction unless you gor for a BIG lift......in most cases 31s will just sometimes rub in the front wheelarch on the seam at the back (sometimes it will be an exposed metal fold, sometimes covered with a plastic liner on later models).

Mine barely does it on the plastic liner with 31" AT2s on so I leave it....but you can very simply just bash the lip over with a large hammer and slap a bit of underseal on to prevent any Fe02. :thumbs:thumbs And I think you'll find that MTs with their aggressive tread pattern are probably slightly larger in diameter than ATs anyway.....so the Kumhos would be a tad worse in that respect.....

But if you don't need them for offroad, just go for standard sizes...if you have a towbar and sidesteps on you are going to be slightly limited offroad anyway, but 99% of green lanes should still be within your grasp! :D

I don't know what the side-steps on the Terrano/Mav are like, but those on the 'Troll are no lower than the sills so don't cause a problem.

I have whacked the towball on the 'Troll several times. The big problem is not so much the towbar/towball but the caravan electrics. I got so fed up of having their mounting bracket bent that I've made up a bracket and fitted them directly under the rear bumper - worth considering, as the 12N and 12S sockets are definitely at risk if you do go laning.

I forgot to mention about the General Grabber AT2 - they are FANTASTIC in snow. I cannot imagine any tyre, AT or MT being any better.
