I don't know what the side-steps on the Terrano/Mav are like, but those on the 'Troll are no lower than the sills so don't cause a problem.
I have whacked the towball on the 'Troll several times. The big problem is not so much the towbar/towball but the caravan electrics. I got so fed up of having their mounting bracket bent that I've made up a bracket and fitted them directly under the rear bumper - worth considering, as the 12N and 12S sockets are definitely at risk if you do go laning.
I forgot to mention about the General Grabber AT2 - they are FANTASTIC in snow. I cannot imagine any tyre, AT or MT being any better.

Sadly the Terrano sidesteps and supporting ironmongery are quite a bit lower than the sill bottoms...probably not the end of the world to leave them on but every inch counts - least thats what my wife always says???
