If my week wasn't bizarre enough, my 2 week old (to me) 3.0 now has a knocking from the box :(

It goes away if I dip the clutch in neutral, but I can't really hear it when driving.

My thoughts? clutch and flywheel :( and I bet its dual mass....

Whining is layshaft bearings. They usually last a while but nine decided to go with a screaming noise then a bang and that was that, put a new box in.

I only get whining when ive got a woman in the car :augie:lol

But that was not a T2 box was it, world of difference, Rick

With the foot off of the clutch, mine clatters a bit, which I believe is the lay shaft bearing. It was doing it a 43k miles and doesn't sound any worse now at 78k miles... that'll jinx it for sure!

Alan

quieter than a mouse today, which is odd.

Then, got home, turned the air con on to see if I could provoke the noise.
Knocking noise started, disappears if clutch depressed.

If I turn the a/c off, the noise continues (with clutch pedal up). Rev slightly with a/c off, no noise.

A number of conflicting symptoms going on, so over to the techs at work I think :)

Simples really with air con on the engine is loaded so smoother, AC off and engine idles a little more erratically, do not worry about it, Rick

Hope it does'nt

is it not the clutch release bearing? mine did it, got a new one fitted with new clutch and problem solved.

I don't think its anything to worry about though if it is the clutch release bearing as they just wear a lot quicker than everything else...

mine makes the same noise some days louder than others, i just turn the radio up :lol

tbh i wouldn't worry about it, mines always done it and i've covered over 10k miles since i've owned it

Sorry Ryan must of missed that one, but in my experience so far the T2 box is a strong box, and I do tend to mistreat them work wise, Rick

yeah, if they have the right oil in, they are prefect, just people tend to put gl5 in, not gl4. that's what ruins them as gl5 is more acidic and eats the softer metals like the synchros.
