So, a change of gearbox oil later, there was still a knock, but reduced. Nice long run, and quiet for now :)

The old oil was suspiciously thin, and dirty....

Simple way to check for worn layshaft bearings. Box will be noisy in 1st 2nd and 3rd when driving and go quiet/er in fourth because in fourth the drive is thru the mainshaft and not the layshaft as per 1st to 3rd.

mine has the same knocking noise from one of the boxes . I thought it was oil levels so I checked them and topped up gear boxes was full so much it came out . transfer box was low I had to put a litre bottle in . but still got the knock but I have found when I put the transfer box in neutral or put my foot on the clutch it stops . is this the transfer box knackered or still the lay shaft . or release bearing ?
