Now then Jim. It will make sorting the rust easier if you give it a body lift.. Just saying:naughty

Ahh my head is being messed with. My son loves the sound of the exhaust without any silencer.

A little progress

Well progress is pretty slow at the moment. The MOT has now run out and we have SORNed it for now. Time is short on a weekend at the moment and the shift pattern isn’t helping. Anyhoo here are a few photos of the passenger side rear arch and boot floor. Decided to really cut back the crap metal and weld in good solid metal so it looks quite brutal but I know once repaired I shouldn’t need to revisit it.
Almost forgot spent an afternoon underneath it last week with a wirebrush cleaning ready to waxoyl after the welding is completed. Noticed one of the rear ARB link bushes was badly perished so cut the old link off as I have a new one in the garage. The other side seems fine so will leave that for now.

Least you know its going to last a long time going back to good metal. Looks like your doing a proper job of it.

I think ill have to do the same to mine in the future.

Can I ask what welder you use? I have a really old sip that im learning on but I dont think it would be up to any chassis repairs.

Well not done a great deal on the truck this week, been taking it easy as I’ve injured my leg. Have been out to the truck this morning and had it running for a while and whilst I was doing that I painted some rust treatment on some of the rusty bits including the chassis that could be reached from the wheel arch.

One question is will the rust treatment contaminate any areas that need welding?

Also someone asked what the welder is, well just a cheap probably chinese thing. It’s gas and gasless but we fitted the gas conversion ourselves and use it with Hobby Weld 5 like lazyferret uses, it’s co2 with 5% argon. Only a small unit but has it’s own castors.

Hopefully will get some progress on Saturday but Sunday being remembrance day I’ll be busy so won’t touch it then.

The rust treatment won't contaminate the area for welding but if your treating rust in the area your welding I would say you need to cut back further :thumb2

Just caught up on your build thread... Wish I had of done it before Photobucket went down the loo! :flush:

Still a good read tho! Looking forward to seeing more! :thumbs

End Of The Road?

Well guys, I’ve hit a low point with the project truck. I’m now thinking perhaps this is the end of the road for this truck. Progress is very slow to say the least and although it is SORN I still paid an insurance policy at beginning of the month so that feels wasted at the moment. The main problem I have is that both myself and my son have very little time. It’s been a busy time of year so far and also not the best time of year to be working outside too. In the coming months I’ve got several weekends that are already busy as well as a stack of course work to do.

Work To Do (before I even think about an MOT)

Finish n/s rear arch welding
Treat n/s primer, seam sealer and waxoyl.
Fit centre and rear sections exhaust
Cut o/s rear arch, boot floor and body mount bad metal out.
Weld new metal into the above area
Treat the above area
Treat and paint both out sills inner and outer, not holed but poor paining previous repair.
Replace osr anti roll bar link

Other than that the truck seems ok, it’s only done approx 72k.

Still pondering my options as I have a stack of work on the house to do as well not to mention the mg that has come to a stand still too.

Think I’ve taken on a little too much.

That is bad news Jim, but I know the feeling well, I still have a stack of work even though the refurb is done I am still there and cannot see the end at the mo, Rick

Hi Jim,

Is paying someone else to do the MOT work a possibility. At least then you will have a road going project which may help balance out the pleasure / work aspect of owning it.
Do you reckon it would be worth more if you did decide to sell it if had an MOT? after factoring the cost of the work.
I feel for you mate, I have been in similar positions before.

Take care :thumb2

Well I got a little enthusiasm together this morning in the rain to put the wheel back on and move it under the car port. It’s damp under there at the moment probably because of temperature changes. Anyway it’s sat there now even more in the way. Forecast is heavy rain until Thursday and then the weather has to dry up for a few days. I’m on late shift this week so may get chance to do something but to be honest the course work really should take priority.
As for paying someone I think a garage would charge a huge amount in labour for all the welding.
Anyway I can’t do anything in a hurry as I’m too busy to arrange collection from anyone.

Well here’s a few photos of what has been done in basically a month:nenau and then what still needs doing:(

Heres the passenger side rear arch from the outside.

Here’s what is left to weld on the passenger side, it’s actually part of the body mounting too.
