Hey Jim, I like the way you painted the suspension parts. Nice and black, unlike my own nice and rusty brown. Any tips? Plan to do this on my own.

Wire brush on the gronder and also a hand wirebrush. Fertan rust treatment and black hammerite :thumbs.

Don't forget goggles, gloves and ear defenders :thumbs

Going to pop an update of the project on here soon.

Good stuff, wasn't too sure about the rust treatment since you can usually paint hammerite straight onto rust. Is Fartan stuff good? Did you spray on? I was going to use hydrate 80 from Bilt Hamber, only because its advertised in my mag I get quite a bit.

Heard a couple of people on here using Fertan so bought a litre bottle of ebay, I've tried different brands of rust treatments over the years and to be honest they only seem to slow the inevitable. Seems reasonable stuff, think holts do one in a small grey bottle that doesn't need rinsing off. Bottle that I got is paint on, it's a very thin liquid.

When you did the front bumper, what thickness of steel did you use ? I've got 1.2mm

I just patched up with 1.2mm. I guess if I were to do it again I might have fabricated repair panels with thicker and cut out the rot. To be honest most of the rot dropped off when I got the grinder on it anyway so just patched over.

Great thread with masses of useful information within it.

This gives me a bit more confidence in having a try at welding mine up.

Regards

Alan

Glad you like the thread. I really need to get around to posting an update just busy busy busy.

Well guys almost a year since I got this truck back on the road amd Ive not really updated it. Will have to put an update on in the next few weeks. It's booked in for MOT on Monday but due to work it has been far easier to take it today and leave it with them.

So the updates will be about the second battery install, the towbar fitting and a reverse camera.

Fingers crossed for Monday.

Jim, what a brilliant story and great work to revive the truck:thumb2

I'm now particularly interested in your way to put a reverse cam on as I've just bought it and started wondering how I'd do this. Might just wait for your next update before doing it by myself :naughty

Will post an update with photos soon. Basically the camera mounts nicely just above rear number plate, I stuck it on with double sided sticky pad and then it makes it easier to drill a small hole and screw it on.

Cables are quite easy really. If you remove the rear light from passenger side of the rear bumper or look up from underneath there is a rubber bung that the vehicle wiring loom enters the vehicle, sort of just on the corner of the rear panel. Often the towbar wiring uses the same bung. Run the cables from the camera through the large holes where the number plate lights are along to the rubber bung. It's possible to gently feed some stiff wire through the bung to the inside of the car, you can either remove the side in er trim or remove the small panel behind the brake lamp and feel around for the stiff wire. Pull the cmera cables through using the stiff wire. Now remove the plastic trim that covers the jack and feed the cables behind from both openings. You can eventually feed the cables under the bottom edge of all the trims to the front footwell. From there work out where you fit the camera.

Thanks for the link. I received the camera/monitor yesterday and checked my car where you mentioned the hole. Usually I haven't got enough time on weekdays, will look into a bit more over the weekend;)

Well guys it’s been a while but a quick update.

Firstly, I need to find time to get my head around a new photo hosting site and then add the photos back after Photoracket did the dirty on people. Moving forward the actual photos will take a while as most of you know I do quite a lot of voluntary work which takes a lot of my time.

Anyway it’s just coming up to the second anniversary of the truck passing it’s test and back on the road. This truck has truly been a great vehicle and in fairness not had a lot of problems with it and it’s been there for us in good times and bad.

So unfortunately this year the truck needs a little TLC to get it ready for MOT. I’m guessing that I won’t make the due date because of life generally getting in the way.

The two big problems are the Exhaust has rotted through in the 2 years that it has been back on the road (there’s a seperate thread open on this subject). The other problem is the old cookie rust! In the boot area, mainly the rear wheel arches. I’ll post a couple of photos so you can see what needs fixing up.

And the drivers side. This has been repaired before and I have to say looks a little botched.

So the current state of play is the truck is on ramps with the centre and rear sections of exhaust removed. MattsTerrano removed this for me today whilst I’m busy. Of course he had to start the truck with just the front pipe and enjoyed the noise but I have put my foot down and I do want a standard exhaust for the truck but whilst exhaust is removed it allows better access to the underside of the truck. My new job is shift work so I’ll have a couple of hours or so in a morning to crack on cleaning the underside. For the moment here’s a photo of the centre section silencer which was blowing.

I’ll take some more photos and update again soon. Since putting the truck back on the road the biggest project has been to fit a reverse camera and a second battery.

Cannot believe that is only 2 years old, Jim I had to work some over the W/E so did not have time to cut out a wing mount nut and plate, also forgot to bring my mini disk cutter home, but will do so during this week, Rick

Crikey Jim

I'm looking forward to seeing you fix that rust problem you have. I wouldn't know where to start :O

Cheers Rick, I guess no real hurry but will see how all the repairs go.

Hey Banshee to be honest we repaired worse on the old blue truck so this bit doesn’t worry me too much. I do want to cut all the rubbish metal out and replace with new steel, do it right first time:thumbs. Clean it up cut it out and replace and then Waxoyl the living daylights out of it. Once it’s done I shouldn’t need to revisit again for a while.
