The 2002 Terrano I recently purchased only came with one key. So, despite having read somewhere that the colour of the immobiliser chip carrier was important (and not having seen mine) I bought a cheap secondhand key on Ebay.

When the thing arrived I found the immobilser chip in the Ebay key. This allowed me to look for it in the original key. One is green and one is blue. What's the difference? Is it the frequency of the chip/RF reader in the barrel? I assume it's nothing to do with the RF transmitter that operates the locking/unlocking? Is there a chance that the Ebay key can operate the remote door locking (if not the engine)?

Second thing I noticed is that the key blade is longer. I'm guessing that isn't hugely significant. Basically, I was planning on using the guts in a new Ebay key shell. I guess I can get an immobiliser chip too once I know the right one I want.

Is this going to be a key that can be programmed at Timpsons?

I don't know bout your model but I know the timpsons in Scotland can make up a key & code for a '96 terrano.

Was £40 when I checked but that was bout 2 yr ago :nenau:augie

Our local timpsons won't touch car keys now, don't know if the bigger branches still do them.

Mines a 2002 and the chip is blue. The blade is the most expensive to get cut,especially at a shoe repairers. The back end with the buttons/battery are about £25 on the bay. Then reprogram with the instructions on here. I presume you have one that works fully. David.

As far as I know I think the Red and Blue relate to crypto and non crypto, don't ask me which one is which.

I know that blue was used on NATS 5 onwards and the Terrano isn't compatible with this

Hmmm. Looks like the blue is an ID60 chip and indeed has a crypto.

I'll keep hunting the internet to see if I can find more info. If I do, I'll report back here.

My other question though is the RF lock/unlock part likely to work? I't looks the same :)

Should be either 433 or 418 the key you have, if you pull the lower plastic surround around the steering column you should see a black Siemens box, if you have one it will say 433MHz, here's a pic

If it is indeed 433, use the download here to re-programme;

If you look at he edge of the fob you should see the chip ref. number and frequency or at least mine does. David.
