I just remember our local plod around here in shady staffordshire, theyd stop you yeah no problem BUT they as Makeitfit says would just give you a decent bollocking, now this had the intended reaction and if your light was out then youd get it fixed, and pronto as you knew that if you didnt theyd come down on you like a tonne of bricks, Now thou, well its all about trying to make you look an idiot by talking to you as if your a child and all this pc (no pun intended) shite. Had an instance where a sargeant was teaching a constable how to do the job and unfortunately the constable was a woman, talk about bravado,it actually made me feel sick being a bloke how he was preening and ponceing about, it wasnt till I told him that the truck was a 7.5 tonne vehicle and the restriction was for 18 tonne vehicles that he changed his tune, did he apologise no, instead it was ok bye on ya way, if this arse was the teacher, what was the student going to turn out like, to me its all about assesing the situation and using your own judgement, not reading from a defied script that has been taught in a classroom. In order for the general public to ASSIST the police they really do need to up therir game, and as Daved says we shouldnt tar everyone with the same brush, BUT I bet these BETTER coppers are the old hats who have seen a bit of life prior to joining the force.
