Dunno Zips, I wanna do it properly you know? Otherwise I just simply won't be confident in the car...!

id have a look at teh little cable then. you never know that end could be coming off

Hi Clivvy, im sure youve looked here
http://bebrs.pie-dabas.net/Webs/Terrano/R20/fe.pdf page 5.

is there any way of puting a shim / spacer in there, maybe like a bike brake cable adjiuster so it "thinks" the pedle is down a touch..

just an idea....

For what it's worth I think ZIPPY has a good approach to this.
Perhaps a packing plate / shim / sliver of plastic or anything which will stop the pedal going back to "idle" could be slipped in somewhere around the accelerator pedal ,(at least just to try it).

Simple is beautiful---I am the former but not the latter

im going to go down the EGR valve route. I spoke to my mate today, and he made a few suggestion, in particular EGR. he says that normall running yes, its probably fine because it will open more or less fully, but at idle, he reckons its probably not closing fully-symptom of this being erratic idling. so thats this weekends task-remove and inspect the egr!

where can I get a new one from, OR should I just blank it?

looks like you have the same idle issue as i have.
did a full service and that got rid of the revs dropping while at idle but it still idles very juddery and the whole car rattles until i increase the revs.
it drives fine with no loss of power just the low idle speed.
will check out the egr valve in the morning as its raining at the mo.

hi guys, just want to bump this thread back into life as ive noticed something important, and probably relevant, and it may get some of you thinking.

just went out to the car to put my "working" MAF back in so that i can test withit unplugged. anyway, i started it up, all ok, havent been for a drive, but i turned the engine off, but left the keys in and on, and i can hear an "electrical" sound that appears to be coming from the PUMP. it sounds like a disc turning almost, with a few scratchy sounds at random intervals..

what think ye?

sure its not coming from the fan ?..... is the pump belt driven ?

hang on ..... fuel pump is electric on yours innit clive ?

if its fly by wire no throttle cable u can adjust idle by slackening screws holding throttle potometer on next to pedal turn it till desired idle then tighten screws back up hope this helps !!!!!!!

no idea Pete...theres wires (three i think)going into it I know that much! but this is what im asking, what can this noise be? gotta be related to my running problem...

it IS fly by wire, and i think i know which part of the pedal you mean but ill be damned if i can get to it mate, have you had any success?? i can just about get a ratchet screwdriver to it, but not into the screws to loosen and adjust....and id really like to try and adjust the idle a little bit...

i did mine with a little rachet a cross head screw driver tip in a socket fiddly but i did mine should be unit with 1 brown plug and 1 grey or black plug in it that u adjust hope this helps

cheers derek, going to try this tomorrow!

looks like we have a plan:thumb2
have heard that these throttle sensors can get clogged with fluff so a chance to check it and clean it when its off.
it is a fiddly job but worth doing if it solves this juddering on tickover.

Well, I've tried and tried but I can't loosen the pedal idle control unit thingy in situ, should I take the whole pedal out and adjust that way???

bah! stupid thing.

cant get at it properly to loosen the two nuts. i cant believe how awkward this is.

is it worth removing the pedal? it looks like one complete unit that simply plugs in..

one point to note, the idle issue-its random, not constant.

any thoughts on the noise coming from the injecion pump??

ALSO, i noticed an adjustment screw on the pedal, its inline with the pedal "stop", point being if you adjust it down, the pedal will be pushed down slightly, any thoughts on this???

if its any help mine has a noise from deisel pump intermitatly when engine running i thought it was normal as engine runs ok

Clive,
there are two distinct parts to the throttle pedal assembly:
a) the TPS or throttle position sensor (a posh name for a potentiometer), and yes this could be gunged up with dirt etc. and may warrant cleaning.
b) there is a switch that detects when your foot is not applied to the pedal this serves two purposes:

1) if the vehicle is moving it cuts out ALL fuel delivery on overrun thereby saving fuel.
2) if the vehicle is NOT moving then the ECU will put the engine in idle mode, the idle conditions are managed by the ECU NOT the throttle position sensor.

It is quite possible that the switch unit on the throttle unit may be intermittent, resulting in the ECU switching from driving mode to idle mode randomly. If the switch is intermittent then you would likely not notice during normal driving apart from a modest increase in fuel consumption, however when at standstill normal vibration from the engine etc could cause the symptoms you describe. It may NOT be the switch, but the wiring/connections from the switch to the ECU.

The adjustments on the TPS are there to get the required voltage swing from min to max throttle, not to control the idle speed.
