breakdown at the disco

I have noticed that the cc mayday red flag break down run by green flag shows a disco on their recovery vehicle in the leaflet this year, instead of a terrano in other years.... not yours is it Ian? regards bri

yet Bri noticed it several times, maybe withdrawn that mk1 t2 as they have atleast
1 lwb mk 4 for members to borrow to complete their hols.

they also used to show a daewoo nubira which we also owned 1 and had little or no
trouble think GF/MD show offer no claims bonus scheme as never been out to T2 in
4 years, and Daewoo was only to glass service due to a break in.

Alternatively it could be driver error, ie run out of fuel or perhaps ill and no second
driver. Obviously being a disco opens up the chances of a breakdown, sorry ID just
kidding, not, not, not.....

Ian`s Disco

Hi Guys. just to bring this up to date ,
Ive had to do a lot of welding for the MOT again .
o/s front under battery tray.
n/s inner and outer sills (home made) + some floor panelling.
petrol tank retaining strap. (home made).
I managed to BLOW a charged battery up .
Due to sparks of grinder setting it off.
EVEN AFTER ME PUTTING IT OUT OF THE WAY IN BACK OF GARAGE.
:dohJUST LIKE THE WARNING I POSTED LAST YEAR.:doh.
It looks as though most of the rusting out was caused by sun roof drains being blocked.
I would advise anyone thinking of buying one of these trucks to check very carefully any original sills ,floor ,boot .as they are not UNDER SEALED FROM NEW
Its a good job i like welding.:lol.

sounds like my disco before i got shut. pity 'cause i liked the 6/7th seats - kept the kids entertained with a little table inbetween for playing on:thumb2, or dog to lie down as a type of berlin wall between warring factions:augie, but the constant welding......

good luck with the welding/waxolying:bow

our lass loves her disco , its a 1993 200 series tdi auto 3 door ( 158k )

Ian`s Disco

She has done 176k now engine still fine ,but gearbox has a bit of a wine.
had trouble with abs censer on o/s/f wire had fractured right at the censer so cut the plastic back a bit and resoldered .its ok now.:thumb2

Ians disco

Well the old girl has got through another mot.:thumb2
after fitting inner and outer sill to near side and part of the floor pan .boot floor was gone in n/s corner . front o/s under battery box had gone the same way.
found n/s/r brake calliper covered in gear oil so had to clean that off
axle seal weeping I may have over filled diff .:doh
finished it at 3 AM this morning.:doh

didnt help that i had forgot where i had put the bolts for the seat retainers. LOL.
A couple of advierys were rear disc pitted (should have seen it before i took the grinder to it)
rear anti roll bar drop link has some play.

At the moment I could join in with them:doh

my mate used to have a Disco, he loved it, but it was very troublesome (not unlike mine, to be fair), i think the main issue with Land Rovers, is rust, not sure why?

Ians disco

Hi JT.
On first impressions .Disco much more comfortable better seat possession
better view while driving.
Ride is much better than my old terrano although its a swb. which does pitch about a bit. never driven a lwb so cannot compair.
Terrano much easy`er to drive (its more like a car)
Disco drives like a land rover /truck, very heavy on steering and wanders a wallows ,but floats over pot holes.
SHEILA says the Disco is a lot more comfortable terrano used to make her back ache when off roading.
Less power than terrano and heavy on fuel.
weighs a lot more than terrano so doesnt get thrown around when towing caravan.
Disco is a rust bucket 13 years old ,I paid £2,500 3 years ago not cost me much in that time apart from the welding (which I treat as a hobby)steel from work ( I made all my own sills and panels) so just price of gas £16 and wire £15 for the mig. is enough to do one side of truck so not expensive. main trouble while working on disco is getting her jacked up high enough in garage at one point i was lifting the roof up as well.:doh
I used Hammerite underseal with added wax oil £7 from Halfrouds. covers very well hope it stays on better than the stuff I used last year ,ive redone all the underseal ive done .and still half a can left.
They were NOT undersealed as standard but it was offered as an option so a could explain some of the trouble in later years.
Have a very good look if buying one.
Boot floor area ,sills floor pans , front vallance , chassis , and reaction between alloy body and metal chassis suffers from corrosion .
Unless able to home repair stay well clear.
Although I quite like working on her its taken a couple of years to sort her out.gearbox noisy engine good body work a BIT scratched "cannot think why"
I intend to get the terrano in garage and have a good look round then decide what to do with her.
Later mk2 models (td5) have there own problems electrics, engines management (do a search for the 3 Amegos ) traction control, hill decent ,abs.
I dont know if i would buy another terrano but would consider a patrol.
but Disco`s are cheaper to buy and maintain also well documented.
I hope this will give others an insite into the DARK SIDE.

Good report Ian :thumb2 tbh youve made feel easier and backed up the reasons I didnt go green oval.

I'm quite happy to tackle virtually any mechanical job from the most basic to an engine rebuild but corrosion scares me shitless. I'm ok (and thats being generous :D ) with a mig so any rot for me = £££££££

Good luck with it though :thumb2

:bow bloody good thread :thumbs :clap

Now i need someone to do it on a defender 90 :augie

sometimes its just the luck of the draw when buying used motors.
my first 1997 terrano was a rot box.
i welded both sills, inner wings, rear floor and front lower cross member.
have got a simular task on with my latest 1997(when i get round to starting it)
haved looked at disco's,shoguns, delcia's and patrols but still stuck with the terrano(for now)all though i have found some welding to do on this one:(top of the n/s inner wing has got a hole coming through.only found it when i fitted a relay for the spotlights and drilled a hole which turned out about 2"too big for the srews:lol:lol

our lass has a 1993 ( l reg ) 200 series 3 door tdi auto disco , and apart from wanting another rear axle ( £140 from breakers ) and a bit of welding , she loves it to bits , its done knocking on for 180,000 , and she uses it every day, the 200 series has a much better engine than any landy according to my mechanics .

it went through its last m.o.t with no advisories only 2 months ago .in fact if you look on the members map and zoom into my house , you will see it parked outside .

the only downside is , its quite difficult for me to get in and out , i have to sit on the edge of the seat and push myself in with my stick , also it wallows a bit on the motorway when going over 80 ( shes had it at 95 !!!!!! )

Ians disco

Well ive spent a few hours on the disco duck today.
near side rear disc and pads were getting a good soaking in gear oil .
Due to wheel bearing axle seal leaking.
Half shaft out hub off clean up all the crud ,changed wheel bearings while i was at it .fitted new seal back together in a couple of hours.
parts came from Paddocks of Matlock .
got 6 wheel bearings £28.60. already changed o/s/f.
also 1 rear disc .£10.97.
3 seals 3 gaskets 3 filter kit
anti roll bar drop link, altogether it came to £69 in total.:thumb2
did a bit more under sealing while n/s/r wheel was off.
near side now done:clap

Ians disco

just been to local car boot.
not much there but its a walk and a bacon cob.:thumb2
we got back to the disco unlocked the doors with the zapper .
while i was putting some bits in the back sheila tries to open her door ,
catch releases but door would only open about 1" then jammed solid.
I eventually got it open only to find the culprit was the door latch (striker pin )
on the door frame hitting part of the door as it swung open.
which has distorted/pulled it about 1/2" away from the door .
just got to beat it back in shape again and all will be well.
Its my belief problem was caused by the rotten sills allowing door to drop.
all squared up now so where is that BIG HAMMER.
