We have a crisis!

Managed to get the engine on the new mounts after a couple of hours faffing around.

Tightened everything, put the tools away started the engine and turned it off very quickly!

Looks like I've bent the sump up a bit and the crank is hitting it:doh:doh:doh:doh

So I'm assuming that the sump needs to be removed and the bent bit pushed out and pray to whatever god's there are I haven't completely fubarred the engine.

Which after a quick search on here means taking the engine out???

Is that right? Is there any other way to lower the sump enough to have a bit of a poke around and try and lower the bit I've bent?

And do you think I've knackered the engine?

To be honest I can't really see the bend in the sump but in the very brief running I could see the sump knocking as the crank went round.

Please send me your sympathies and man hugs, but please I know I've ballsed up and I really don't need comments about what a dick I've been. Maybe in a a couple of weeks but not right now!

Still, I wanted an engine hoist and now I have a real reason for me I suppose:eek:

Despondent Dave

Personally I wouldn't worry about it mate, sump off, hit with thumb detector, sump on, all good (don't forget oil :D), I reckon you'll be fine bud, I have a good feeling about this one.
....and remember, EVERYONE makes mistakes, and I mean everyone :thumbs

Ouch... I feel for you big time....

Silly idea, what about one of those dent pull companies?

There you go terranosaurusdoug has just shown you his mistake when the thumb detector found its target. :D

That's a big man hug if ever I saw one.

Drill and tap it... slide hammer... weld it up or liquid metal.

The dent pull kits hot glue melt a mushroom type plate to the car body, and then have a clamp to pull out the dent.

Spot weld some bolts to the sump ....

Works on thin body... but should work.

Sounds good..

Take the engine out..... you know it makes sense and you should be able to do it quicker this time:augie

We learn by our errors I remember my biggie 50 years later !

Cant remember if its a springy dipstick or a sold rod type. Is it possible to drop a long rod down the dipstick tube and give it a tap ?

If not I like the idea of attaching some bolts with weld and pulling.

My biggest engine rebuild error was when I had just rebuilt an old 1275 Cooper S back in 1968/9 era. I had connected the drive shafts, put the exhaust system a tricky Y pieces front pipe system back on, twin carbs all fitted, just about to connect the oil cooler when I realised I had not put the distributor drive shaft in.

Got a stud and screwed it into the distributor drive shaft and was all set up with the crank for TDC with No 1 plug on compression. Slowly allowed the shaft to engage and there was a horrible clunk as the stud came unscrewed from the shaft allowing it to drop down into the sump /gearbox !

It was about 1.00 am in the morning and I was determined to be able to drive the car the next day - I was on the bring of tears and low with self doom. My Dad had gone to bed so I woke him up and he came downstairs and into the garage to survey my handy work.

Go to bed son we will look at it in the morning. Next day with the help of a magnet attached to some copper welding rod, a pair of surgical forceps and about two hours of failure we finally tickled it out !

Oh the Joy !

Sump can be removed with engine in situ but front diff will have to come off to give you the room to lower it down.

Thank you for all the replies...I'm feeling better already.

If I weld ( I've only got a stick welder ) do i need to remove the oil first? I tend to be a little heavy handed:augie

I would have thought so, the oil will try to conduct the heat away..

Only thing that worries me with welding is if the oil catches fire, it might become the ultimate internal combustion engine...

I've got a top notch thumb detector, it works almost everytime :doh:lol

OK you have a stick welder, so weld a long bolt or similar to the bent bit of sump (do not bother draining the oil) and then give it what for with a hammer to pull the bent sump down, once done cut the excess off with a mini disc cutter, Rick

It is done!!!!

Well what a buttock clenching day it has been!

Welding the sump has joined compressing springs onto the list of jobs that will be farmed out to the professionals if it ever has no be done again.

Weld nut to plate, plate to sump attach slide hammer and slide as hard as you dare!

My welds are awful and do you think I could get a decent weld on the sump?? Between panicking about setting the oil on fire and burning a weld hole in the sump I've been a bit of big girls blouse.

Oh yes, at 8 o'clock this morning managed to slide all 4.5kg of hammer onto the end of my little finger.

So done, no more knocking and time will tell if there is any permanent damage. I'm about to take her for a quick spin.

Thank you to everyone who posted - your help, ideas, solutions and support was and is very much needed and appreciated.

Looks like either the water pump or steering pump.are intheir way out. I have a whirring squeak somewhere top and front:doh

Not so despondent now Dave

job well done! :thumb2
i would have just let the crank knock the sump till it went quiet or exploded!:D

.................. and Daveluck now has his very own little finger detector.

Glad it's worked out for you Dave, I've yet to delve into some of the heavier engine work and the dark art of welding.
