not with the facilities needed, Swifty can weld and has set himself up in a workshop but as yet he has no hoist, and I thought Nissans price might be stupid, Rick

if spring holders/new or second hand were placed over the chassis providing the metal is still good would it be mig or arc welded?

stick welding (arc) gives better penetration but can blow holes on thinner metal mig is easier but in hard to get places the gun is a disadvantage, so probably a mixture of the two in this situation as access is very difficult, bear in mind even getting the old ones off with the body on is no easy task, Rick

Thanks Rick,Removed the o/s spring this evening and the spring holder is in ok condition had a good scrap/stab at it, i also power-filed the chassis runner around the spring holder n/s and it's in good condition it's on axel stands so I'm thinking of removing the axle and exhaust to give better access I've been all round the fixings with plusgas how long to grind the spring holder off?

good pics, access is difficult, well it is for me I cannot bend like I used to, I would hack off all that I could get to without touching the main chassis rail, then with that removed you can carefully grind and or chisel the lugs that are welded to the chassis, if you have used replacements carefully look at them so that you end up with the same foot print on the chassis to match what you have as a donor part, the closer they fit the easier the weld but the worst one will be on top as the body is close, as for how long? it takes as long as it takes, Rick

As you said the difficult part is between the chassis and the body once i start i will not be able to move the terrano, will take another look tomorrow night,i was thinking of trying to plate it top and bottom but i will need to grind down to good metal if there is any left

trouble with grinding is it is all mountains and valleys, so you end up grinding down to valley level, grit blasting is the best, just takes away the rust leaving the good metal, next best is knotted wire brush on mini disc cutter, if you can get it in, Rick

Hi Guy's
will start cutting/grinding the spring holder off this weekend will post some photos when it's done

Hi Cabit, hope all is well and you have suceeded in your project. Regards bri

Thanks,Just started this afternoon, axle almost out, exhaust back box off, ordered the new spring holder from Nissan's yesterday will be in on Tuesday, thanks to the guy's for the offer of a second hand one but I'm thinking how long would it be before i would have to do this again don't want it failing the MOT,trailing arm bushes also need changing the shopping list just keeps getting longer will post some photos when axle is off

it's off

removed the axle and rear exhaust box to get better access to the spring holder started cutting with reciprocating saw cutting close to the chassis then using a 115mm thin cutting disc removed the rest also used a flap disc 40 grit, i have to say it was no where as bad as I expected it took from start to finish an hour and half, four out of the eight trailing arm bushes need replacing but will replace all.collecting the replacement spring holder from Nissan tomorrow will be interesting how good a fit it is. Photos to follow

very well done, must see the pics, not the easiest of jobs, Rick

Just for those that may be unsure what he is doing, this is the part being replaced, bear in mind the body is close to the top of this so working room is poor, Rick

Here's a few photo's,picked up the new spring holder today the fit is good needs a little work but not much I've pulled the half shafts tonight to replace bearings and seals will post some photos of the rear axle stripped down if anyone is interested http://s1171.photobucket.com/albums/r555/cabit2/

Great pics, I am surprised how well the chassis has cleaned up, the deep rust seems to have confined itself to the top of the spring mount itself, my only concern is how you will weld the lug that sits on top of the chassis, but great work, Rick
