Knowing now that the bearings were over tightened after putting new discs on I jacked up the front to loosen them off a bit, I thought I would do this right before the heavens opened. :doh When everything was removed down to the lock ring I tapped it round with a hammer and screwdriver to free it off. Yep that was too tight. I spun the wheel back and forth a few times thinking this might let the bearing sit a bit better and then replaced the lock ring hand tight till there was no play. The wheel spun quite nicely for a few rotations without having to spin it like the Wheel of Fortune. :clap & no play top & bottom.

I did the same the other side, but the wheel does not spin as freely and when I came back from a drive this one was warm to touch and it smelt hot :doh

Is it still too tight?

Sounds it mate, just back it off a little bit more, you'll get it right in the end

No No No No No, these are taper roller bearings, they are designed to have a pre load, hand tight, no wheel play then a couple of lock screw holes if the hubs are getting hot then most likely auto hubs need attention

thanks ric. Am I right in saying that the wheel should be able to spin at least 1 revolution without too much force applied? If not then the bearing must be too tight?
re. auto hubs, I stripped and cleaned and then packed with grease, dont know what else I should do with it. All the bits looked good inside.

I wouldn't pack the auto hubs with grease, either a coating of oil (gear oil is good) or a LIGHT smearing of copper grease or multi purpose grease. :thumb2

Packing with grease could make them stiff in action :)naughty) especially in cold weather, they need to be able to move freely.

thanks, I have used muti purpose grease. I've now read the download on the hub cleaning. I haven't actually stripped and cleaned the Hubs at all!!! I stripped the brake rings and cleaned. So later today I will strip and repack the Hub. (The bit with 6 Alan bolts that you pull off)

oh bollocks. I've just put grease everywhere I could get it. anyway they're nice and free running now with no play.
can the hubs get a little bit warm, or should they be cold all the time?

Sorry just read that title as "HOT TUBS AND SMELLS A LOT " ? I need a holiday :lol
