Got the old ECUTalk out last night and read my fault codes as I've been having a running issue.

I've been running my car with no downpipe for the past few days and whenever I get into the 2000RPM range the car jolts violently until you tickle the throttle past that rev range, since putting the downpipe back on the problem has got better but is still apparent.

The only fault code I got was for the MAF (incorrect signal), turns out mine is one of the transition point cars, so I have the Hitachi MAF but Fly By Wire Zexel Pump rather than the cable driven pump

Hitachi can be cleaned as I've been told, is this true?

Looks like it's as simple as removing the security screws on top, unplugging, 4 bolts to remove gauze, jubilee clip on the pipe.

Once it's exposed what then?

I've cleared the fault code but it re appears as soon as I start a journey and hit the problem rev range again

i tried to clean my bosch one to no avail :(
tested it as per download and the readings were ok
messed about for ages trying all sorts :doh
bought a copy one off the bay

I've heard the Bosch ones should be left well alone as they're self cleaning but the Hitachi can be removed and cleaned

those security screws are pants, couldn`t find any thing to fit :doh
ended using long nose pliers to get the b$$$rds out !
chucked them away and fitted self tappers,
carry a spare maf around now, 2 minute job to swop :clap

Did I hear you say that there's a workshop download for the cleaning?

Pop to Maplins and get switch/contact cleaner... it's basically spray IPA, but does not leave any residue. Do not get the one that leaves the Silicon lubricant though.

Spray it on liberally, give it a couple of mins to soften any deposits, and then spray it again. If really dirty, repeat. Do not be tempted to stick anything inside to wipe it around, just use the force of the propellent to flush through.

PoundShop sell hex drive screwdriver ends, in a rubberised case that has loads of the so called security screws bits in. I keep one as it has the triangular heads, torx, Hex, and flat with pin in the middle, plus a couple of others.

These be them...
