I've just joined this forum hoping someone can shed some light on a problem wih my 03 Terrano Sport. About 6 months ago I was doing a long journey and when I came off the motorway I noticed a sqeeking/metal rubbing noise from under the vehicle. It would get worse at speed and stop when stationary and was there when coasting. It stayed for a couple of days intermittently and then stopped and has been fine until last week when it started again. I'm sure I can also feel some vibration now. Before I take it to a local dealer any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

perhaps you should start by checking prop shaft and UJ's

Thanks for quick response. Forgive my ignorance, but when you say check prop and UJ, what am I checking for? Excessive movement/wear? Is so is it a big job to replace them? Thanks

uj's are not a hard replacement, and are easy to check for wear/play. just hold one side of prop shaft and try to twist the other side the opposite direction if there is play, it will be obvious as your hands will move before the prop shaft slack is taken up. there may be no play, but the uj may need greasing through the grease nipple. again not difficult, just takes a bit of time and a greas gun.

Take your front wheels off and have a look a round the disc break to see if any thing is stuck in there like a small stone.
Give the hub a turn and see if you can hear when the noise is coming from could be the disc pads are wearing down or clip catching.

Take care when removing wheels and playing, use common sense and ensure it's well chocked so aint doesn't fall. Remember don't trust a jack!!!!!

Besides what has been said with the car off the ground spin each wheel in turn to see if the noise starts.

Thanks again to you all for responses. Again, excuse my lack of knowledge, but I'm learning!! I've located the front propshaft and there is a little play in it. I'm not sure which part is the UJ though, can you explain. If if is the front propshaft can it be easliy removed and the vehicle used in normal 2wd to test? Thanks again

Think I've identified the UJ - is it the piece on the end of the prop that looks like 2 u pieces interlinking? If so I think I can see some metal wear an what looks like a split washer ring. I've taken a photo but I cant find a way to upload it here. Any advice appreciated.

You either need to get a photobucket account and just post the link to the photo you upload there, or for one per post, just use the paper clip icon in the Reply To Thread box to upload a single photo. You might need to resize the photo a bit or it won't allow it....about 900 pixels high usually does the trick...

Here's the photo- the best i could do. I hope you experts can make out wht it is!

well if your prob isnt the UJ , it would be advisable to renew both ends anyway methinks ....... more erstwhile members may offer other advice

Thanks Nisstay. Can i remove the propshaft and use the vehicle temporarily in just normal rear wheel drive and if so, if it just a case of unbolting the 4 bolts either end?

hmm not sure i understand this one . but the only thing that jumps out at me is . yours is a 3 litre so you wont have auto or manual hubs, so you got drive from the front wheels to the front diff all the time the front wheels are turning . other than that more pics please :thumbs
