hi

just returned from a 1400 mile round trip from edinburgh to Penzance and my 51 plate terrano 2.7SE+ managed very well ( apart from fuel consumption towing 2 tons ) but have some issues i need help with

1. there was occasionally a smell of burning oil in cabin - no smoke or visible loss of oil then on closer inspection the large square unit on top of engine has a rubber hose on RHS as you look at it and there was sign of oil leaking out from hose . Is this coming from Turbo and what is the potential issue here???

2. Also poor gear selection using clutch pedal but looks like pedal is closer to floor now - have i read somewhere there is a bush on the pedal that is the issue?

3. Finally when pressing the brake pedal on some occasions there was a vibration through the pedal for a few seconds but this was intermittent plus my ABS light goes on and off .

have managed most things up to this point so any assistance would be highly appreciated

clutch pedal the bracket can snap sometimes and give that problem or the damper pipe .

we are getting a few abs problems recently, mine included , im starting to wonder if the road salt or grime off the mucky roads is causing the sensors to get covered in grime and not work properly. i might give mine a good pressure wash before i start to look further at the brakes

sounds like you have a weeping intercooler pipe , you can remove the oil breather from the air intake and put it into a oil catch tank

had the whole brake system renewed 6 weeks ago the sound was there then and i thought it was just worn pads but obviously not the case

Burning oil smell could be gearbox , comes up round the gear lever gaitor.
Oil blow by in the engine . When did you change oil last?
Put a good synthetic in there, amazing difference:thumbs
ABS is gay:p

As said previously about the ABS and the slippery roads, you only need to be braking and go over a bump to set it off. However for some reason the NSF sensor cable does break, usually around the thick insulation near the bracket on the suspension arm. Last time it happened to mine I waited until the warmer weather and soldered new wires to the sensor but make sure you water seal it.

Also the smell coming from the gearstick gator is correct too, mine was worst when towing a caravan. Theres a lower gator that breaks up and I think it's that what causes it.

As for the gears, do you know anything about the gearbox oil and when it was last changed? if not get it changed as this may help.

The terrano is a bit picky with it's oils so if some service walla put the wrong oil in you'll suffer poor gear changes too. The g/box gaiter is almost defo the prob mate. Oil came pooring out of mine when I parked it on it's side :augie

ABS is still gay:p
