Hello Ian
I forgot to tell you the glow plugs replaced all running fine now so thank you xx

Hello again Ian
Took the terrano and hooked it up to the stock trailer in a very muddy field tried to drive off and the back wheels spun put it into 4H and the light came on to say it was in gear but when I drove off the back wheels spun and the front wheels were not driving so put it into 4L again the light came on but again the front wheels did not turn :?: :? Un hooked the trailer and still the terrano would not drive off so had to get the fergie out to pull the terrano out  Any ideas or am I going to have to spend more money taking it to a 4 wheel drive garage  Thanks again
Wendy

auto hubs

as mentioned in previous posts it sounds like you auto hubs are not engaging.
just a thought has it got auto or manual hubs?
if they are manual you will have to get out and lock them before you select 4wd.
there is a download on how to strip and clean the auto ones with pictures so you can compare what yours look like and what they should look like.
hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply
Yes they are auto hubs and I agree they are not engaging but the hubs have been stripped and one side had broken clips a kit was bought and fitted the other side was ok now back together still no 4 wheel drive
Thanks anyway

Last time I had trouble with my hubs, one side worked fine but the otherside wouldn't engage because of the brake ring being damaged. I don't know the full ins and outs but when one side has grip at the front but the other side doesn't then you get no drive to the front at all. someone did try explaining it but the info seemed to fly like a bird right over my head.

hello from sunny norfolk

wendy.
do you have a trolley jack or means of jacking both the rear wheels off the ground at the same time.

you wrote.
I have now turned both drive arms to the front wheels and they both lock up forward and backwards.

so my idea is as follows .
1. turn both drive shafts outill they lock.
TAKE PAINT/CHALK ECT PUT A MARK ON BOTH DRIVE SHAFTS.
SO THEY CAN BE SEEN FROM FRONT OF TRUCK.
2. jack rear wheels off the ground and put blocks or simular under sills to prevent acidental dropping to ground .
3.place in low 4 wheel drive and first gear
4. get some one to watch the front wheels for rotation or movement .
listern for clicking noises etc.
5.repeat opperation in reverse gear .

IF NO MOVEMENT STOP EVERY THING AND HAVE A LOOK AT PAINT MARKS .
HAVE THEY MOVED "IF SO PROBLEM IS IN THE HUBS"
IF NO MOVMENT THEN LOOKS LIKE TRANSFERE BOX NOT WORKING.
let us know how you get on
GOOD LUCK.
rgds.iandouglas
ps
PLEASE
PLEASE BE VERY CAREFULL
WHILE TRUCK IS JACKED UP.
DONT TAKE ANY RISKS.

Thanks Ian
I do have a trolley jack for the tractor so I can do this and no I never take risks so I will be carefull  I now have another problem
Clouds of blue smoke comming out of the exhust. The exhaust has blow on the front flexy bit would this cause the blue smoke :?: This really is the worst car I have ever bought the nice man saw me comming didn't he.
Surely it can only get better or should I give up now :?: :? But thank you for all your help

front flexi

have got a front flexi for a 2.7 tdi lwb which i never got round to fitting so its as new(got a full system)will sell it for a good price if you are interested.probably wont cure your hub problem :?
was going to suggest some thing simular to ian but i was going to say let some one else drive your t2 in 4wd while you look underneath to see if the front propshaft is turning.if it is then its a hub issue.

Thanks elty
How much do you want for it :?: I do not even know how much they cost
:?: do you know if this would cause all the blue/clear smoke its comming from underneath where the exhaust has blown and out of the rear pipe :? Or do I now have a problem with the engine too :!:    :p  :x  But hey if I hadn't bought the terrano I would never have found all you good guys -cheers-

Hi Ian the front drive arms are working
So does that mean need to take hubs apart again and while I am there replace the other side even though it looks ok :?: . I now have been intouch with the garage who fitted the fuel pump and filter and fuel pipes they are having it back today to take a look at all the blue white smoke problem I have asked them to double check the drive to front wheels.
Thanks for all your help will let you know how it goes :(

Hi to you all
I am now running this thread under clouds of blue/white smoke as I appear to have 2 threads in this section  sorry and thanks

hello from sunny norfolk

hi wendy .
well if the drive shafts are turning then thats the best sign you could have had.
as members of the it dont work hub club have said they is very tempremental .
if you have the time engage 4 low drive forwards 4 yards stop take the
ring of bolts out of the hub careully pull hub clear and see if its moved into the locked possission if not can you move it forward by rotating the hub on the shaft by hand till it engages.
if you have a camera phone take some pictures of the hub or make a drawing so you can compair with the other side if you can lock the hubs by rotating them on the shaft after removing bolts feel if other side moves as free .
THESE HUBS HAVE A HABIT OF STICKING DUE TO OLD GREASE .
PLANK CAME UP WITH A QUICK CURE OF TIPPING EGG CUP FULL OF ENGINE OIL INTO EACH HUB DRIVING FOR A FEW MILES AND THE HEAT GENERATED THINS THE OIL AND MELTS THE GREASE.
IT WORKED ON MY HUBS AND AS A BONUS IMPROVED MPG.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK YOU WILL GET THE BETTER IT YET :p :p

Hi Ian
I have a smallholding I sell eggs ,veg, meat, and poultry. With Christmas on the horizon the Turkeys are my main job they are all free range over 6 acres and they are very naughty  When I got the Terrano stuck they all came running down the land and stood and stared at me while I swore they thought it funny  so they made me see the funny side of it  But it is hard to make it pay so I have another job in a shoe shop which I call my restbite  . The road to living off the land is not easy.
And the terrano is making it a lot harder at the moment :( I need it to work!. Been through foot and mouth, avian flu, and the cabbage white butterfly now the terrano  Thanks for the help
