hello from sunny norfolk

hi wendy.
re your front hubs.
A quick check involves laying down so find a nice dry place .
lay under front of truck look for drive shafts going to front wheels. If you turn them by hand they will rotate only so far. "then lock the front hubs"
(it takes approx 1.5 mts to lock or unlock them by driving )
so you will need to turn the drive shafts a fair way.
if they both lock up all well and good ,
but if only one locks then the trouble is in the OTHER hub.
if neather lock up try turning them both in the opposite direction .
let us know how you get on .

YOU SAY YOU PUT A KIT ON ONE SIDE DID YOU FIND ANYTHING WRONG /BROKEN .

Hello again thank you for the last reply
Will get out there tommorow and after the animals are feed and watered will get under the bus and start turning so when it stops turning your saying put it into 4wheel drive and then turn again :?: Think I have got it :? ok this will then prove the other hub needs a new kit too :?:
Thank you so much this information it is saving me so much money and I am getting to know my new tractor which just like the fergie needs tender love and care if it is going to do the job. Will get back to you but if it is not for a few days it is because I have got a lot of stock to move and it will be with the fergie this time round and the poor old failing vw polo which has been a brilliant alround smallholders car with help from fergie who is also in need of a good rest and overhaul. Thank you so much

Woops forgot to say yes found 2 split pins /coggs that looked like they should fit together but were broken :?: :?
if thats the right term well if not they were broken on the hub that I replaced with a new kit. Sorry not very up on free wheeling hubs but know i need to know
Thank you for your time and patients

Hey Willow tell me about your Fergie!!!!!!! I want one but the mortgage payments get in the way.

Hello Jim
The fergie is a 1946 - 1947 ferguson T20 continental petrol little grey fergie. One of the first made.I mow with it with a topper which can be a bit hairy at times as the pto is in drive all the time so stopping is fun  I am hoping to plough with it next year if I can get the bits for it I love it  Just about to start her up to get the live stock tailer out of the field where the terrano got stuck  Then I will look at the 4x4 on the terrano :x got a busy 2 days ahead so hope I can get it sorted or I might get the fergie road legal  what fun

and said this also.

:? :? SORRY WENDY YOU`VE NOT QUITE GOT IT YET. :p

"Will get under the bus and start turning" SO FAR SO GOOD.

"IF/when it stops turning" THIS MEANS ITS LOCKED THE HUB ,
AND IS WORKING CORRECT. :p
DO THE SAME WITH THE OTHER SHAFT /HUB.
IF IT ALSO STOPS TURNING[LOCKS} THEN THAT IS ALSO WORKING OK.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YOU DONT NEED TO PUT IT IN GEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF THE SHAFTS LOCK UP
TURN THEM BACKWARDS AND THAT WILL UNLOCK THEM.
if the above works then the drive to the wheels is "OK"

THATS ENOUGH TO BE GOING ON WITH. :p
let us know what you find. :p

Hello again
I have now turned both drive arms to the front wheels and they both lock up forward and backwards  so that must be good news what now :?: Many thanks

hello from sunny norfolk

hi wendy .
well things are looking up .
right first things first .you are sat in truck engine running in neutral on main gear leaver small lever in high range 2wd move small lever to 4h ,then press small lever down and select 4wd low.
(THERE IS A NEUTRAL POSSISION ON SMALL LEVER MAKE SURE YOUR NOT IN NEUTRAL)
place main lever in 1st and move off
after approx 1.5 mts your front hubs will have rotated and LOCKED
light should be on dash saying 4wd.

DOES IT MOVE . :?:
IS IT MOVING SLOWER THAN NORMAL :?:

IF NOT MOVING ARE THERE ANY NOISES COMING FROM
GEARBOX OR FRONT HUBS. :?:
rgds.iandouglas

Hi Ian
Thanks for your patients  :? . Yes I did put it ito 4wheel drive as you said I followed the instructions on the sun visor  . Yes it did move yes the light came on  But no it did not move slower and no there was not any noise from the gear box front hubs :? :?: One thing the light came on as soon as I put it into gear and before I drove off :?: Thanks again

hello from sunny norfolk

hi wendy.
did you push the small lever DOWN and into low.
3rd low is about the same ratio as 1st high ,so you will notice the differance.
WARNING
dont use 4wd on TARMAC because it can damage the hub componants.
rgds.iandouglas

Hi Ian yes pushed it down into low and I am doing this going up hill on my field :?: thanks again :? I will go out and make sure now

hello from sunny norfolk

wendy .
did you stop while you selected low box.
did the lever feel as though it selected ok.
have you tried it in 4h
rgds.iandouglas

Hi Ian
The lever goes into high and low ok it feels in gear yes I did stop to select the low and I did try 4h to me the lights are on but the engagement is not there even though everything says it should be :?: But I know nothing  :? Thanks for your time with this

I'm still not convinced the infamous brake rings aren't broken. I would personally remove the auto lockers and check the brake rings. You don't need to jack the car up or remove the wheels to do this. There are many threads on this subject so it might be worth having a browse if you haven't already. I got sick of mine keep playing up so I bought manuals and haven't looked back.

rgds.iandouglas

I will now download the workshop manuel and have another look.
I really can not thank you enough for all this help  Will let you know how I get on.
Wendy

After looking at workshop 16
I can say that this is what I replaced on one side and the other side was ok :? Will have another go at putting it into 4 wheel drive tomorrow it may be me
Thanks again
