Hi guys,
I mentioned in a thread there was a green lane code of conduct which is general knowledge to most green laners but for the sake of new comers it was thought worthy of posting.
If we all follow these simple rules it might just help keep them open, you never know! :)

Here is a simple list of guidelines for greenlane users.

Ø Keep to the defined track. Detour only to pass immovable obstructions. Report any obstructions (including low branches) to the highway authority. Be critical of your own abilities and equipment when assessing an obstruction; it is your right to abate a non-lawful obstruction, but do not commit yourself to a bigger task than you are equipped for.

Ø If the route is not obvious on the ground, ask locally, or check on the maps held at the highway authority offices.

Ø Travel at a quiet and unobtrusive pace and as slowly as practicable; its recommend a maximum of 12 mph when in a 4x4 and on an Unsurfaced Right of Way (URoW). Ensure your vehicle is fully road-legal, URoW are subject to the same laws as surfaced roads.

Ø When travelling in groups, keep to a small number - ideally five or less. Split larger parties up and either use a different route or allow a good interval to elapse before following.

Ø Do not travel on URoW when they risk being affected beyond a point of natural recovery once the weather improves. If need be, walk some or all of the route first to determine its suitability.

Ø Avoid damage to trees, hedgerows and boundaries. Some roads carry vehicular rights but are physically too narrow for 4x4s.

Ø Be courteous to other road users - pull over, stop your vehicle and switch off the engine for passing horses. Thank those who move over for you.

Ø After consultations with Country Landowners Association and National Farmers Union HQ’s, "best practice" dictates that gates if they were found to be secured in an open position should be left open, and those which are found shut or swinging should be shut behind you; the landowner might appreciate being told about a gate insecurely propped open if you see them.

Ø Keep dogs and children under supervision. Watch out for injured or trapped animals, and report all suspicious events to the landholder.

Ø Guard against all risks of fire.

Ø Take your litter home and that left by others if you see it, wherever practicable. Plastic bags can suffocate stock if swallowed.

Ø Help to keep all water clean.

Ø Remember that wildlife faces many threats and URoW are valuable habitats, take special care in spring and early summer.

Ø Follow the Country Code, but be aware that it is for your guidance only.

and to add if you are seen by any member from a 4x4 forum not adhering to the rules and regs you will have your registration and pictures if applicable handed to the police and will be excluded from future events

But hopefully with education no one will, I imagine most of the time its just ignorance and not knowing the rules

but hopefully none of the members on here pal!
errrm well there might be lol

i have made sticky's but dont agree with some of the posts, nor do i regognise the code of conduct shite, of course you should act responsibly but you should in all aspects of life... show me where its law for me to take someone elses rubish home with me for example !
its all just glass crag and all the other no hope fuddy duddies telling people how they want people to behave. none of them have had any impact in keeping lanes open . its all shite but most will know my thoughts on these matters

And everyone is entitled to an opinion!

The picking up of others rubbish... well fair play but I know I have myself in the past as I think its just unsightly if nothing else, I love my countryside and want to remain able to use it :thumbs

And none of the points are laws, just a guide to good conduct!

And a bit of courtesy also

The trouble is that all these crags n glass lot are missing the bigger picture. Memers of those groups know the law etc and what lanes can be driven.
However there are thousands of other 4x4 people out there new to the game and have a map :augie
Map says ROW so off they go not realising that some bobble hat has closed that lane for them. Suddenly they're in deep doo doos:doh
Why dont these quangos get their act together and do some serious signage explaining road closed etc AND for those lanes you can drive, then where the track is:eek:
Broody country file the other day was a bit smug, not a single mention of stuff like 4x4response and others I cant remember the name of:eek:
Bah humbug:(

Again I agree completely.
There is a lot more to be done, but if were all doing our little bit maybe the others will also, one can hope!

good 'straight forward' rules, in parallel with the 'country code' for walkers cyclists and other users. Thnaks for posting them, very helpfull :thumb2

The vindictave few - Report to who??

Who would be the department to report wilfull damage of Row's to ?
As posted in another thread we got stuck, as some peed of vindictive local had decided to dig a substantial amount of the byway out with an excavator..

Fortunately the troll was well equiped to deal with such a Tw4t5 actions.
But what if some small child had dissapeared into a 3 foot puddle, or one of the horsey brigade hadgone through slipped, the hore may have injured the rider, or broken a leg and had to be shot????

Further to that local construction had been damaged so they could drag a lump of sandstone across the route round.

Whilst they may disagree whit a quite responsible day out, they are causing danger to other members of the public and should be delt with:nenau

Are you not allowed to go around obstacles put in the way like a rock or fallen tree. If thats the case the landowner won't be too happy when you do this around his obstacle he has put in.

Well he shouldn't have dug a dirty great hole in a public right of way:doh, Which I went through not round:clap:clap

I know, But then the landowner shoots himself in the foot thats all I am saying. :D

no you are not supposed to deviate from the track as it can cause damage to the countryside

the best place to complain is the local glass rep or the councils row officer

same tossers with the discovery that they tried to jusp and snaped the chasis

Not correct, you are definitely legally entitled to drive around anything that physically impedes your progress on the actual ROW, you just have to do so carefully and causing the minimum of damage..:thumb2

When alls said and done its a Right of Way and nothing/nobody can lawfully impede that.
