I think you may be right. Either a heavier oil or some other additive but it came very cheap - 1600 quid for a 54 plate so I was waiting for the catch - I guess I found it.

drive it till it dies, then you can strip the box and tell us what failed, as yours is the later model think the box may have gone the same way as the diffs, ie crap, compared to pre 2000, Rick

I really need it to be reliable so will get it rebuilt as long as the price is right. It's done nearly 180,000 so maybe just time for some bearings?

Think you will find it will be mega expensive, if I knew the older box would fit then I have a couple, but that is the problem, poss cncfabs will know, or even may have a box, Rick

I've been trying to find out if the boxes are interchangeable or not but I'm hitting a brick wall.

Best price I can find on a recon box is £500 plus Vat exchange :eek:but I might just have to bite the bullet rather than risk an unknown ebay box that might be no better than what I already have :nenau

Not a great beginning for my truck but things can only get better eh?

IIRC the earlier ones pre 1996 I think have a slightly lower ratio but from the MK2 twin headlight model onwards the boxes are all the same but as you have said an ebay buy could be very risky as it could have the death rattle & the only way around it really would be to hear it at tick over & test drive the motor:doh

That's good info cheers Sweety :thumb2

From what I have read on here, the Td manual box is different to the Tdi manual box and the gear lever etc, "I think"... requires a bit of bodywork re modelling.
But also " I think" due to the different length, you will need a modified prop shaft, and a modified gearbox mount... Also the older box doesn't have the crankcase position sensor, and the older Td box has a mechanical speedo take off point. So enough there to make it unfeasible. :nenau

I am only going from memory,:doh if you search, then you will find the details.
Someone showed some Pics side by side if I recall.

On ebay a few years back there was an input shaft bearing and input shaft refurb kit. I guess these are still available.
BUT only solves the problem if this is the part that needs replacing, and no excessive damage has been done to anything else in the box.

Either way, removing the box is a big job, BUT then to find it is still the same after replacing the input shaft... soul destroying.

Consider replacing the clutch and release bearing at the same time and look at the wear on the clutch release lever thingy.

Good luck.
There was a guy in the Wolverhampton area that did gearbox replacements, hand him the keys and collect it later. I can check my records at home at the weekend, I made a note from a few members who were very pleased with the work.:thumb2

Hope it helps.

Best regards,

Rustic

Thanks Rustic. I'm fairly sure that all TDi boxes are the same although Milners list a different clutch from 07/2003 onwards :nenau

I think the option to take it somewhere and collect it later all working is starting to appeal to me so if you come across that number I'll certainly give them a call. :thumb2

Thanks again,

Ian
