front brakes

just want a quick bit of advice,
my front brakes i believe are shot, im quite mechanically minded, are they a big job, as this is the first 4x4 ive properly owned, and any tips as to what to look out for,

Same as any car brakes thing so look out for are seized sliders

right an update, seems ive also got seized sliders, had a quick look just and the front pad(outer) is almost like new, but the rear is down to the metal

am assuming the caliper is straight forward to remove, but what about the disc? do you remove the 6 14mm bolts around the hub or not?

where can you get new sliders from, anyone on here?

Strip it, clean the pad carrier up until its nice and rust free, add some copper grease on contact point of new pads not too much mind, dont get any on disk or pad face, clean the sliders with emery tape and again add some copper grease, 99% you wont need new sliders.

The rear and front brakes wear at different rates anyhow

To remove the disc you need to remove the auto hub and also the complete wheel hub and bearings there is a good guide in the downloads section

pick a dry day if out side at least two hours a side, if you are lucky.

Set of discs and pads from ebay £55. makes a huge difference to stopping the vehicle,

To remove the disc you need to remove the auto hub and also the complete wheel hub and bearings there is a good guide in the downloads section

As I said before on this task, don't let the drive shaft fall out from the back, it is a pig to put back unless you have arms like a gorilla.
There is a knack, but requires quite a push, so best avoid if possible.

Grease the bearings while you are at it.
Safety first, make sure you use good axle stands on firm ground.
Start and complete one side at a time.

everything went well, apart from a snapped slider
but thanks to jim (shropshieterranobreaker) had the parts and delivered in time for weekend, cant thank him enough:thumbs,
but 2 hours a side and the rest,
cause id not done 4x4 before i took my time, in all nearly 4 hours a side, but that was freeing everything off, regreasing, et ect

only advice i can give is, this is straight forward enough, just when you remove the hub, put all the bearings, plates ect in an order that you will remember, so you can put back in reverse, and the little screws are available from nissan at 59p plas vat

but in all very satisfying, and well worth the £10 membership fee for the help and advice alone:thumb2:thumb2

Aye. Took me ages first time. Several days in fact! Though getting sent the wrong bits didn't help...

I just about managed to avoid snapped sliders on mine but it took a LOT of penetrating oil and wiggling the slider back and forth with a spanner - then walloping them with hammers.

Arrghh.. having same problems with my Terrano. Have garage doing front brakes, one was down to metal as had ceased up. But when they've stripped them one of the bolts on the brake caliper carrier has sheared off. Anyone got a drivers sider caliper carrier going.. Nissan price is usual mad price!

Here is what happened to the Frog 2 year's ago

The disc was scored but went again with no problems :thumbs

But for some reason the caliper didn't want to know :nenau :lol :lol :lol

Had to use port'a'power to get it off

Think I got my moneys worth out of the pads..... I mean pad The other 1 had legged it :augie

I've just replaced both of my Torque members (calliper Carriers) this afternoon whist replacing the front pads as both had the top slide bolt seized. Fortunately my Disks are OK as the pads ob both sides still had 5mm of meat still on them.
I got them from Stephen AKA cncfabs off here. Might be worth seeing if he's got any more. or maybe Makeitfit, as both are stripping Terranos and Mavs at the mo.
I noticed a difference straight away as far as stopping ability is concerned.
