just bought a 51 plate terrano does anybody know if the running gear (front diff, axles etc) all the runnung gear is the same as a 98 terrano and is the rear diff the same with limited slip diff? as I need it for my next couple of projects cheers

I believe it will have the lighter duty diffs (the rear one you can tell as it has a tin bolt on plate on the rear, not sure if the front is externally any different) but the rear is still LS, Rick

i had this exact question with my 54 plate, the fluids atleast for the rear diff were the same but there is a heavy or light duty rear diff so fluid levels can vary. someone put a link to a website for me? possibly milners or something?

Can you replace the light duty for a heavy duty? And does it make much difference to the average user?

on the rear, only if you change the whole axle, front should be easy if mount points are the same? as for difference for the average user? probably not, I think it was stinka who had a lot of info on diffs, Pete makitfit should also know, me I just forget things, Rick

1.3 ltr for the later models. there isnt a light and heavy duty is there? just that the earlier ones had a heavier casing/different gearing?

lighter casing material alex... early ones were a bit more cast, ours are pressed. ours are lighter, we go faster :D

I think if I remember correctly, (and I do have memory problems) stinka saying that they have a lighter crown wheel and pinion, Rick

for more speed! lighter = faster! :D
i would love to see some facts based on this? the shell is prone to rust if not treated, apart from that, ratio and better fixed hubs for off roading :sly:sly

OK agreed lighter = faster, just did a little checking old dif H233 newer c200 the numbers relate to the diameter of the crown wheel so later are smaller, Rick

it may have something to do with the fixed hubs bringing down mpg perhaps? boosting it up via the rear diff? pure guess work and a bottle of red on the side..

Size doesent matter it's how you use it, right? :naughty

Eheheh

I have had the red and now into me scotch, and have an engine to re fit tomorrow, but will be done, pics tomorrow, after 8pm, got a dinner date at 6.30 Rick

fair play, bit of rum now me thinks. enjoy :thumbs

Rum...:nenau:nenau
That reminds me...
Where can you get Lemon Hart rum these days?
I found a local supplier about 5 years ago, but he no longer stocks it.

A rum hot toddy... great in the cold weather... or any time really.:augie

IF you are certain that it is the same running gear as a 98 then the rear will either be a light open rear diff head or a H233B LSD. the front will be a 7 1/4 inch crown wheel or R180A open diff head.....also the R180 was used in the Subaru impreza and legacy(forester or estate wagon to you guys i think)...the reason i say this is that the subaru R180 is LSD and fits the terrano II housing. makes for a good mod.
