HELLO GANG.
I am to run a days laning in Derbyshire Sunday 10th
TYPE OF DAY WILL BE SUITABLE FOR COMPLEAT NOVICES, WITH STANDARD ROAD TYRES. COULD SPLIT THE ROUTE TO ACCOMADATE ALL,
AS LONG AS ENOUGH LEADERS ARE AVAILABLE
SO LOOKING FOR LEADERS, AND EXPERIENCED OFF ROADERS TO COME ALONG.
N.F.M.O.C. On behalf of Children in need appeal.
A DONATION OF £1 MINIMUM PLEASE .
UPDATE 30/1/08
Regarding off road days . I have asked for a contribution of £1 minimum per truck for n.f.m.o.c. children in need appeal 2008.
After talking to sheila about it, she has offered to make a pudsey bear ,

The idea is to take it on off road days, add photos to n.f.m.o.c. site PUDSEY DOES PINDALE sort of thing .
SHEILA`S idea is to raffle pudsey for c.i.n .

That's me then

My preference would be a Sunday - any Sunday. I have to work quite a lot of Saturdays and so far I haven't been able to make a laning day :(

Whatever the day I'll do my best to be there.

All the best,

Ian.

Ian, If it's on Sunday can you please put us down for this, as dinky's
Cooking & theres soup.

Fantastic!

There's a mixture of excitement and apprehension brewing in my stomach and I'm not sure which one will win!

A couple of questions:

I have removed the side steps from my LWB but I also have a tow bar that I REALLY don't want to have to remove. Am I going to get round alright with a tow bar?

Do you normally do lunch in the middle of a field (do I bring a flask and sandwiches etc), or do you go to a cafe/pub?

They might be daft questions but I just don't know...

Looking forward to putting faces to names.

All the best,

Ian.

Hello Ian,

I will be there providing nothing happens between now and then, As you know i am more than pleased to be part of your day out.

Think we will have to follow this one till the end what ever the weather.

Regards,

Mav.

hello xr6r or may i call you ian.
tow bar can be a bit of a problem tends to get a knock or two but they are up to it.and it gives us some thing to attach tow rope to .
THAT IS THE TOW BAR BRACKET RATHER THAN THE BALL SAFE`R. the main problem tends to be the electrics especialy if you have the twin socket set up. the bracket can get bent about a bit and the plastic sockets can get broken ,so most tend to remove the sockets and/or bracket.put in a plastic bag and tye tap under neath out of arms way.
what one of our members came up with is get an extra length tow ball bolt with an extra nut . clamp socket bracket between nuts .then its a quick job to remove and put up out of the way.
lunch break we have at EYAM VILLAGE CAR PARK.
which is a council car park with clean toilets . there is a charge some days £1 per hr i think.
local shop 150 yds away.
we usualy do the flask and sanwiches thing, but DINKY is a wizard with the BBQ .so usualy plenty of sausage /bergers available .
i am sure DINKY aka john will post up what he is planning to do .
LADY IN RED aka lucy normally provides the cakes and sweeties .
but alas she is navigating for CAMERAMAN aka andy her dad in WALES on Saturday .so intends to have a lie in unless we can tempt her out for the day.
ANY ONE WITH A QUESTION OR ANSWER FOR THAT MATTER SPEAK UP.

You can call me what you like as long as you take me through the lanes and get me back safely!

I've only got single electrics but I'll have a go at getting them out of the way before the big day.

Dinky sounds like a good bloke to me...

LADY IN RED aka lucy normally provides the cakes and sweeties but alas she is navigating for CAMERAMAN aka andy her dad in WALES on Saturday
Just my luck :?

Thanks for the advice. I just hope I don't make a complete idiot of myself - a partial idiot is fine however.

As this is a Sunday, it's looking likely that I'll be bringing Mrs XR6R (Bron) and my 6 year old (Olivia) with me. Please let me know if that's not a good idea.

All the best,

Ian.

DERBYSHIRE GREEN LANES DAY,SUNDAY 10th FEBUARY 08

HI IAN.
VERY PLEASED YOU ARE PLANNING ON BRINGING MRS XB6R [BRON]
AND YOUNG OLIVIA.
WE HAVE HAD MANY YOUNGSTERS OUT WITH US IN THE PAST.
the only problem that has sometimes arizen is it can be a little un nerving
for all first timers .
DUE TO BEING UNACUSTOM TO DRIVING OFF ROAD over uneven ground
SO try to keep it light dont drive to fast .(remember its your day we are only here to help you enjoy your selves)
DRIVE AT YOUR OWN PACE .
TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK AROUND YOU AT THE FANTASTIC VIEWS .
if you need to stop to re asure olivia AND BRON DO SO.
you will be driving your truck over some very old pack horse roads ,the horse would make its way between rocks down twristing foot paths and then as transport progressed horse and carts were used and paths became a little wider .That is what you may be driving on Sunday.
or driving between stone walled fields farmers /shepards drive flocks of sheep to and from the summer grazing high in the hills .some of these drovers roads problably are centreys old. "there may be a few lambs"
then there is the moors .Main roads of there day. Passing through them
As we drive over HOUNDKIRK MOOR look to your right and see Sheffield lights spread out in the valley below.
If you think this sounds good then you will realise why we come back time after time.

Tow bar flanges often have fairly sharp edges. With respect, wrapping a tow rope or strap around the flange is an even worse idea than slipping one over a towball. It just is not safer as the tow strap/rope would be de-rated to less than half it's nominal braking strain.

The advice that you often see on the internet - and especially on Australian websites and Aussie made videos about not using towballs generally refers to the style of 50mm towball that is threaded and screws into a steel bumper. They don't usually use EU/UK style towballs that are fixed to a towbar flange by two M16 bolts. Those are very strong and will withstand shear forces well over 20 tons (the area of the neck is around 1 sq.in and has a breaking strain in tension of about 30 tons). I don't think there are ANY documented cases of a EU/UK style towball breaking during an offroad recovery - at least, I haven't been able to find any on the internet.

Cheers
Andrew

DERBYSHIRE GREEN LANES DAY,SUNDAY 10th FEBUARY 08

HELLO ANDREW
I am told the following has happened in the past.
A 4x4 was stuck in deep ruts .Another 4x4 reversed into position to try and tow the stuck vehicle out of the ruts. A tow rope was placed over the tow ball of the stuck 4x4 other end was fitted through a clevis type of tow jaw.
A spotter was on duty and the slack was taken up ,the tow commenced and the stuck 4x4 was freed no problem
.BUT got stuck again after a short distance and the slack was taken up again and a tow commenced .
BUT THIS TIME THE SPOTTER WAS NOT NEAR ENOUGH TO BE INVOLVED
IN THE SECOND TOW .
JUST AS HE GOT THERE THE STRAIN HAD BEEN TAKEN UP AND OTHER HELPERS WERE CONVERGING ON THE TOWING 4X4 TO LEND A HAND . THE ROPE SLIPPED OFF THE TOW BALL .( DUE TO THE ANGLE OF PULL) THERE WAS ENOUGH STORED ENERGY IN THE TOW ROPE TO COIL BACK ON ITSELF AND HIT ONE OF THE WOULD BE HELPERS IN THE FACE .

I AM NOT SAYING THIS WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN ,BUT AT LEAST BETWEEN US ANDREW WE HAVE MADE OUR MEMBERS MORE AWARE OF THE POSSIBLE RISKS INVOLVED . :p :p :p :p

AFTER SEEING SOME ONE USE A KINETIC TOW ROPE I WOULD NOT BE HAPPY IF IT WAS ATTACHED TO THE TOW BALL .
DUE TO THE SNATCH INVOLVED WITH THIS TYPE OF ROPE.

I UNDER STAND THERE IS A WAY OF USING AN ENERGY STOPPING LIGHTER STRAP ONE END OF WHICH YOU ATTACH TO THE VEHICLE AND THEN PASS THE TOW ROPE THROUGH OTHER END BEFORE ATTACHING IT TO THE VEHICLE .
ANOTHER WAY IS A WIND SAIL (a COAT) ect DRAPED OVER THE TOW ROPE if something untoward happens the sail will act as a damper.
rgds. iandouglas.
ps. could a piece of rubber ect be placed over any sharp edges to protect tow rope from cuts

Donnington

My truck has been accepted to appear on the modified vehicle display at Donnington on 17th Feb. If any of you are going I would like to meet you, so al see you there hopefully :?: Unfortunately this duz mean that I'll have to pull out of the meet the week before in Derbyshire as I've got stuff to sought out before Donnington. I hope you can understand my discision as I've never attempted a show in this way before. Am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. :( On a good note tho this opens a space for someone on the subs bench. Go for it and have fun.
