my coolant level has dropped down, i topped it up just before xmas to the max line and today when checking it was below min, i cant see any leaks anywhere, any ideas as to why the levels are down?

If you've recently changed the coolant or worked on the thermostat or radiator, there could be an air lock, that has now worked through.

Leak Check carpet for leaking heater matrix.
Hoses do weep after time as the rubber gives a little.

Check oil level in case the head gasket has blown, also check coolant for oil, and remove the coolant resevoir cap, and check for bubbles when ticking over.

Nope not done anything like that

All hoses appear to be ok, carpets are dry as a bone

Oil level is fine, no oil in coolant, no bubbles in resevoir. Checked rad and that is full to the top. :nenau

If your water pump is leaking and you have a sump guard you may not spot it.

If the leak is relatively small its impossible to see underneath the water pump and it eventually drips out further back than you'd expect because of the sump guard.....

I'd take the guard off, take it for a run and stand it somewhere that you can see if anything is leaking on to the floor.

If so, its the pump thats bolloxed.....

ah, Yep Ill agree woth that.. cheap fix too. new pumps less than £60 from ebay

mine only leaked when hot and running. when stopped nothing..

as it was hot you couldn't see the water coming out.

yep had exactly the same thing.....evaporates before it gets anywhere but its enough to cause a slow drop in coolant levels.

see if you can get a torch to look carefully just under where the pump attached to the block.....might see evidence of deposit from leakage.....

I've always run mine with a bit of rad weld in with the coolant, ready just in case.
In November I flushed the rad and refilled with Anti freeze, 50% with no rad weld, and no signs of any leaks or loss of coolant as yet.
It has never used any coolant from year to year. :thumb2

i've just remembered my viscous coupling went a few weeks back, i just took the fn off and forgot about it i bet the pump went aswell :doh

different engine similar issues.

on troll since rebuild, hgf and pistons.

been using water about litre a week, on zd, theres a fixed
cap on rad and an expansion tank with pressure cap, plus
a non pressurised overflow which has min and max, takes
about half litre between marks. always carried some coolant
mix in case, and only done short trips.

now this tank level was dropping so was filling, as had snow
didnt wnt to loose truck to garage again so monitored almost
daily and topped up. what have noticed now is this tank is
empty, expansion tank level has dropped to roughly the
'weld' line in the plastic and not dropped further, plus in
main rad its still full to brim, guessing that the level in the
expansion matches top of rad.

thinking now top up non pressurised again and see what
happens to level, dont think 2.7tdi had this non pressure
second tank.... any takers?

Go to the back of the car and smell the exhaust if you can smell anty freez it could be your head gasket going and pushing water out through there. Smell with car running of course.

illy
