As said I use Ccleaner, others will recommend different progs to do this.

It does most of the above, but back the registry when asked in the prog.
File system check, I think, can but found by Start-my computer-right click drive C- choose tools-file system check, tick the two boes to repair then proceed. It won't as you need to restart and it will check and try to repair. let it proceed. Might take 30 mins to complete.

Sorry for sketchy instructions but I havent used ms stuff for a while. David

Been busy all weekend, so missed this. You've already had all the right advice. One other thing worth doing - I'm assuming as you're on XP that the machine is a few years old.

Back up anything important as the hard drive may be likely to fail on you - Windows can deal with bad sectors as they crop up a bit, but you may find that the freezing was down to the odd corrupted file. Should the Bootloader section go, it'll be goodnight Vienna for your PC and those photos/videos etc will be harder to recover. Is it a desktop or a laptop? email me the spec of what you've got - if I have better loafing about spare, I'll send something over to you.
