bonour again

after the saga of the hubs, i now have a leaking water pump on my 2.7 1998maverick.

i've ordered one from milner off-road, and read the download about changing it.

just a couple of questions;

is a nissan mistral 2.7 the same as a maverick 2.7 ?

and having done a search, the times taken seem to range from 30 mins to 3 hours. what would the panel consider a reasonable time to change the pump for a non-expert following the download ?

is it possible to do this repair on the drive or should i take it to the garage who have quoted me €120 to do it ?

thanks

arthur

Hi Arthur, yes the Misty and Terrano are the same as far as the water pump is concerned. Only you can answer the question about doing it yourself as only you know your own skills. I personally would allow myself a day so that I have no pressure on myself and just go for it, then if it takes me an hour or so I've got lots of time to drink tea:thumbs

thanks for that jim.

it all looks relatively straight forward on the download, but there's always the fear of the unexpected.

as i live in (very) rural france, i can't be without a car.

the garage that quoted me (not a franchised dealer) reckon it will take 3-4 hours for them to do it.

i'll read the download a couple of dozen more times before i decide i think

id allow 4 hours on the drive . its an easy job . if you have aircon the adjuster for the belt is a pain in the bum. till you know how to do it then its easy .
can be done with the rad still in place , but really id take the rad out first time.

it'll take me 40 mins to do one now . but 4 hours and no stress . anyone could do it :thumbs

but replace ALL the belts when you do it. best/easiest time to do so:thumb2

thanks for that.

i suppose it's the fact that when the radiator's put back again i could get an airlock or something like that.

it's like everything else i suppose, if it goes according to plan no problem, but if something goes wrong...

arthur

edit. the belts were done 2 years ago, do i really need to do them again ?

just keep squidging the hoses, fill it into the rad top NOT the expansion tank and recheck it a few times during the days after you've finished.

and don't damage or forget to replace the rad shroud-its an important element easily forgotten.

thanks for the advice folks.

now here's a tale;

the maverick failed it's MOT (french) because my wonderful dog had chewed the rear seatbelt and frayed it a bit.

so i order one from e-bay and decide to change it this afternoon.

all goes well for a while then i go to undo the last bolt, the bottom one. what happens ? i turn the ratchet and the plate that holds the secure nut in the wheelarch come loose... so now it's off to the bodyshop to get a plate welded on etc etc.

it's the little details that catch you out:doh

arthur, thinking it's time for strong drink:augie

Hi Arthursmith
The failure of the lower securing bolt of the rear seat belt attachment is a common failure. My '96 T2 had the same problem but instead of seeking to weld on a new plate (mucho dosho!) I simply drilled a hole in nearby sound metal and through bolted the existing attachment. Then I cleaned up and glassed over the original hole and it passed the French CT no probs.
BTW where in France are you? I'm in 46800.

bonsoir CL

i wish it was that simple, i don't think that there's much good stuff around the anchorage to give me a good fixing. but nice to know it's a fairly common thing, my mrs has been giving me gip about it all afternoon "should have gone to the garage" etc etc

i'm a bit north of you i think, 87330

arthur

edit. could i cut a plate for the inside (under the carpet) and bolt right through ?

Far better to have it all plated and welded as it's a safety thing. I had mine done 2 years ago.

Totally agree with you on that one Jim, how could you live with yourself if they failed in a accident.............

point taken

all plated and welded today, just needs undersealed.

now for the water pump at the weekend

bonjour

well it's a nice afternoon, i finished work early, and i've got to step 2 of the workshop download for changing the water pump and have my 1st (and hopefully last) query.

it says at step 2 to disconnect the oil cooler lines from gearbox to radiator.

as far as i can see the 2 lines that i think are the ones have a rubber tube connecting them together in a loop.

does this make sense ?

arthur

Just had a look, are these Auto Gearbox Cooler pipes? so surely if yours is a manual you shouldn't have these? can you post a photo perhaps? also try sending Rossco a PM as he made the document so may be able to offer some advice.

Jim

hi jim

just checked again, and there doesn't seem to be any pipes connected between the gearbox and the radiator.

the pic in the download appears to be taken in the same place as where my two pipes are linked by a rubber tube.

can't get a very good pic as i'm too close to it.

arthur

edit. my car is a manual

PM Rossco to be sure. Remember Briggies problem last weekend with the oil cooler on bottom of radiator, thats what i thought it sounded like.

Jim

isn't briggies 2.7 an auto ?

i've pm'ed rossco for some advice, but isn't he in new zealand? hope i get this sorted, the mrs has said she wants the car back by monday NO excuses!

arthur

yours is manual. so just pull the top and bottom hoses off... you wont have an oil cooler on yours....
