bought a second hand midland 38 with a 4 foot mag mount.seen it working in the guys car but now i want to install it in mine.just wondered if i will have to set it up with the swr again now its been put in mine.i haven't changed anything i.e the length of the coax cable or the length of the antenna.seems fine powers up,transmits and recieves(so the readings say)but all i seem to get is static.any help greatly appreciated :?

elty fitted mine in a spare cubby box in front of gearlever, got it from breakers.Should swr every time remove arial.Fed lead from battery to power it.Hows the tyre hunt going.

thats what i thought about setting it up,although it only cost me 25 quid i dont want to fry it.got to go on a tresure hunt in my dads loft now to see if my old swr is still up there, might even be my old home base up there somewhere.as for the tyres i got 4 technic amazons yesterday for 176 quid brand new.had them fitted for 40 quid so 226 in total.

well the swr meter is dead so iv'e bought a new one off ebay for a tenner but i dont know if a 4 foot whip on the roof will get ripped off on the next lanes outing.are the mini springers any good :?:

If it has a good mag mount that sticks well you will be fine  I've got a 5ft springer one & it has took some knocks when going off road but did'nt move an inch  But if you are worried about it you could always mount it on your bonnet

I've got a three foot springer and get good distance out of it, though I'm thinking of getting a 5ft one to get even more.

I've had it on a 6" mag mount for most of the time and never knocked it off despite passing under some very low branches and basically through some bushes at times. Its now on a gutter mount attached to the rack and been under one particular low bridge that only just clears the rack a few times and it just bends over and rattles along the bridge.

I've seen 2 base loaded none springers snapped whilst out laning including one that was on the spare heel carrier - I wouldn't have anything else for CB use on a 4x4

I would check the swr everytime you move the rig or aerial, stingers or good aerials for laning but i prefer the sirio!!

I have always been weary of mag mounts. In the past i have had them slide and move.

I put the 5ft spring whip ariel on a door mount on the back door.

if i can find a nice safe secluded place to install the cb i will mount the antenna on the roof bars then i won,t have to keep setting it up every time i go out laning.was looking at removing the front ashtray and fabricating some sort of bracket but to get it to fit i will have to cut some of the trim, which i didn't really want to do.thought about mounting it in the drivers door, then its out of sight but the 4 foot whip will probably give it away :?

hi elty 001.
pleased you have got a cb now.
all i do is chuck it on and go .mind you thats probrably why i dont recive very well

my current midland is quite small and fits in what was the rearward cubby box.

still toying with fitting on top of the dashboard above air vents. plan is to use velco so can be stored easily. wondering about routing wiring thru dash to avoid them loose down front of dash. might change cigar plug to something less likely to come apart.

well ive decided im going to just get the mrs to hold it tight when we're out laning  only joking going to fit it in the cubby hole just below the ashtray like dinky suggested, might even make a little cover so its out of sight

to big to fit in there so its back to the drawing board as they say :(

cb installation

after playing about for about an hour iv'e decided i'm going to fit the cb in the drivers door pocket, going to make a bracket that picks up on the scews for the interior handle, just got to figure out were to route the wires and it's a goer

Now there's a place i would have never of thought you could put one, will it not protrude into your leg? 8O

I mounted my CB on top of the the trans tunnel in the drives footwell, I made a bracket that attached under the dash & another one which hooks under the centre console.
Just thought it may give you another option

thanks for all the great ideas as to where to put the cb.to tell you the truth i am still undecided as to where to put it :? thought about mounting it on the roof just above the drivers seat,it fits nice just between the sun visor and the door.going to have a look if i can fabricate a bracket which picks up on the sun visor mountings.if it seems like to much of a project will go with the drivers door option :| i think :?:

have decided to go with the roof mounting, can use the mounting points for the handle, which are hid behind the roof lining.going to fabricate a bracket in the workshop tommorrow.have also decided to mount the antenna on the spare wheel carrier so another bracket to fabricate but should all be done this weekend

Hi elty, I'd be interested if you could upload some photo's into the gallery and let us know please. My ham radio has a remote mount front panel so it was a bit easier than mounting a full radio. I made a little bracket from hard board and a block of wood slid into the ash tray hole below the radio.
