Mr Fuzzywuuzzy said the the whole tyre must be within the arch, while I argued it's only the tread that counts
A friend was nicked recently for his tyres sticking out too far, but he was told it's only the tread bit that counts, hence my belief I was OK.
Obviously big nose plod sees it differently
He also dipped my tank I asked him when I'd have it back and he looked confused:doh I said that's about a £1 there mate
Hey ho, the joys of the police state.................................only last week we were snow angels on mercy missions all over the place, but normal service is resumed

The hole tyre MUST be covered by the arch

an awkward one that, i know some one who got stoped and taken to court, who then got off again as it was a standard fit wheel and tyre on a lotus edition isuzu trooper.

I have been dipped so many times i loose count, usualy not by the police though, customs and excise are usualy the culprits and come out with some lovely comments for example
"its white, your lucky" not lucky just an average law abiding citizen, bloody cheek

the biggest laugh was them trying to dip a trooper despite me telling them it was petrol!

having said that i have got away with enough things, so swings and roundabaouts i suppose

well pete, you know what to do the next time it snows, fu**em, i would'nt help them anyway, do them a favour, and they will still stab you in the back.

Council Directive 78/549/EEC of 12 June 1978 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the wheel guards of motor vehicles

2.1.2. The rear of the wheel guards must not terminate above a horizontal plane 150 mm above the axis of rotation of the wheels (as measured at the wheel centres) and furthermore the intersection of the edge of the wheel guard with this plane (point A, figure 1) must lie outside the median longitudinal plane of the tyre, or in the case of twin wheels the median longitudinal plane of the outermost tyre.

2.1.3. The contour and location of the wheel guards shall be such that they are as close to the tyre as possible ; and in particular within the part formed by the radial planes referred to in 2.1.1, they shall satisfy the following requirements: 2.1.3.1. the projection - situated in the vertical plane of the tyre axis - of the depth (p) of the outer edge of the wheel guards, measured in the vertical longitudinal plane passing through the centre of the tyre, must be at least 30 mm. This depth (p) may be reduced progressively to zero at the radial planes specified in 2.1.1;


In short, the wheel must NOT protrude more than 30mm past the edge of the mudguard.

But if the Officer thinks that your vehicle is dangerous because of the mods then he may issue you a ticket anyway and leave it up to the court to decide.

If it goes to court and he says is dangerous and you dont , thats prob enough to get a conviction.

Would it pass an MOT like that ?

proper coppers dipping tanks.... dont think so , thats a tax issue not a police issue.

as for the tyres ive said it so many times always keep them in the arch then there is no need for roadside disputes.
4 tyres sticking out is 4x3 points. instant ban

as for harrasment, probably but if your card is marked (and id guess it is now) your stuffed
options are
sell it and get another one
get a cherry plate - wont last long cos itll show up that your the owner

or regester it in someone elses name - like what i do

but first cover the bloody wheels up.

in summery we both knew they were border line , open to dispute by the coppers. you knew the risk . and gambled ...... and they picked it up


so cover the bloody things up


if you want arches you can pinch my shogun body kit if you like (replace it later ) i dont need it right now .
its a full set and round the side of my house . im back a week today

wish i could be more possitive . but the coppers down that part of wales are notoriously tossers , so not worth the risk

30mm is not what its says (that is referring to the depth of the wheel arch ie how much space upwards there is in it), but anyway its irrelevant those rules are for homologating a new car for sale within te EU and do not effect cars once they are actually on the road etc. I was once sent a link to a police and despite months f discussion they could not find a specific law governing tyres beyond arches etc.

Learnt my lesson a few years back with piggy wigs, recovered a stuck mate of a road which was closed due to snow. When I got back to the open road there was Mr Plod sat nice and warm in his disco with disco lights flashing waiting to give us a bollocking. I asked "if you knew someone was stranded why did you not assist" which he replied "I should not get cocky young man, and he should not have been down there in the first place"
He didnt do us, but then I dont think he actually had anything to do us for. I would have fought it all the way if he had though... cant see how i'd be done for recovering someone stranded in extreme weather :nono

Just had a look at your photos too, the tight barstuard!!! Looks like someone does have it in for you
I think just about all the modified trucks in my club have wheels as wide! My Suzuki included, the wheels protruding out of the extended arches around 1" and its gone through MOTs like that. I was told it was legal because of the extended arches... oops! lol

i dont hink the protruding tyres are an MOT thing, but that doesn't mean it isn't somehting you can get done for their is a huge void between the MOT and the law. And even if not you would have to prove the car was still exactly as it was presented for MOT

Mot rules have some degree of interpretaiotn by the tester, and the law has the same by the police and the courts, in fact it seems a lot of people can use it to suit themselve, exept me of course :doh

though i do agree with the advice, of just cover them up, you will never win, it's not worth getting in trouble over!

As a senile old fart ..... About 40 years ago, while living in Liverpool, I was working as a fleet tyre fitter for Associated biscuits in Long Lane, Aintree. One evening, Plod ( Dai book & pencil), stopped me for a blown number-plate light, and insisted on checking everything else on the car. While he was doing this, I checked his tyres on his Panda car, and found two tyres "As bald as a baby's backside".
As he got his pad out to book me for the number-plate light ( He couldn't find anything else wrong ) , I said to him "When you've done that, give me the book, and I'll give you a ticket too".
I said to him " I'm a fleet tyre fitter, and you've got 2 bald tyres on your car. I've got the registration number of your car, the serial numbers of the tyres and location on the car, your shoulder number, time and place" . Needless to say, he was really Pissed off with me, and after some "under-his-breath" comments, let me on my way, with a warning to get the bulb replaced PRONTO !!!
