As above, I've recently purchased a steering wheel on eBay from another Mk4 as mine has started to wear into holes and has gone all black and bitty, I also purchased a new air bag separately, I had trouble finding a seller that would go to the effort of getting me the serial number as I wanted to ensure I didn't buy one that had been recalled and the vehicle had not been in to have it replaced.

Both have arrived and were separate, being the logical bloke I try to be, I decided while I was in good light and was warm that I'd see how the two went together, paid no attention to it and clunk, it was together.

I now for the life of me cannot separate the two again and if I don't I can't fit to my car :( I've removed the bottom cover and removed the audio control and although the workshop download refers to one I can't remove the right cover because it hasn't been cut out (see pics below)

Mine is the Mk4 Black Steering wheel BTW

Please help!!!! :bow

Part of my soul is saying, " be sympathetic ", but the rest of me is laughing my arse off.

Sorry bloke, but hell that's funny.

:lol

I am quite sure there is a way to get it apart, hopefully someone will come along that is more helpful.

:thumbs

No idea on the MK4 that will teach you to look carefully first, Rick

Sorry bloke, I'd love to be more helpful.

:nenau

Told the wife last night...

...she nearly wet herself laughing.

I'm sure someone will have an idea.

Is there nothing in the service manual to cover it?

F.M. I'm still chuckling.

:lol

Yeah I've looked in the workshop manual and it refers to 2 bolts either side :nenau I didn't get any in the box with the wheel :doh

How easy did it go together? If fairly easily then I'd have thought it ought to come back apart the same.

At the end of the day, the bag has to pop out so I can't believe it's that secure.

Can you poke something through the bag and push the front off?

:nenau

It's the kinda thing I would have done !

I too would have probably done the same thing so don't feel too bad. I would have kept stum until I had found how to get it off but it's out there in our little domain.

How about asking the seller you got it from maybe they know the trick ?

Does this video help you it may be simiar ?

Have you tried whacking it im sure something will give :lol:lol:lol:lol

I believe if you connect the wires up to a battery it may pop out? :D

Sorry mate, I know that's not helpful :lol:lol:lol

Kidding aside though, please be careful? I don't know if static can get to any of the detonation circuits, but it's not worth taking many chances. There wouldn't be any plastic snap clips or similar that act as one-way locks, maybe? :nenau

Thanks for the link mate, I've had a watch and mine seems a little different to that so not much use unfortunately :(

I might ring the eBay seller back that sounds like a good idea :thumb2 Hope they are helpful :thumbs

Hi mate

Were there any pictures of the back of the airbag on the ebay advert that may give a clue?

Any joy yet ?

That's a good shout bro, I'll have a look

Looking on U tube at various videos if there is not any kind of hole in the steering wheel boss that operates a release mechanism then it is most likely located by a set of Four Nylon Clips much like a door card clip.

If it is Nylon type fasteners then it needs a firm pull against the wheel nice and square / even to pull it out.

It's probably designed taking into account that no one would be silly enough to put the airbag on unless the steering wheel is fixed to the car, so you have something to pull against...

I reckon you will need to find a way to strap the wheel to a bench, and then pull on the centre...

Hope you are having some luck with this.
Looking at a few pics and methods it would seem that your steering wheel may have a long wire type spring that 4 lugs on the airbag all snap over ( one at 3,5,7,9 o'clock positions ) thus holding it in place. It would seem that a screw driver or other blunt ended implement pushed up from the bottom (6 o'clock position) between the steering wheel and airbag and pushed quite hard against the wire spring will release it from the lugs. Airbags unnerve me though but worth a go with care if nothing else is successful. Did I mention the with care bit?C__Data_Users_DefApps_AppData_INTERNETEXPLORER_Temp_Saved Images_$_3.jpg

Extra picture of i think the back of your airbag, you should be able to see the lugs the wire fits behind. Good luck C__Data_Users_DefApps_AppData_INTERNETEXPLORER_Temp_Saved Images_$_3(1).jpg

I'm worried I'll damage it and/or detonate the air bag
