ok so im really thinking hard about a roof mounted air scoop instead of a snorkel

im thinking a scoop to take air from the point the screen meets the roof for maximum air intake
i plan to run a 3 inch hose along the passenger visor area down the screen pillar and down to bellow the glove box where i plan to put a water trap then through footwell into engine bay

similar to a scooby rally type of thing

as you all joked about the light pod i thought i would just go for the dakar look all over

will it work any obvious dangers could i ram too much air in

I beleive some of the better brands of snorkels safari etc do have a bit of this effect to make up for the fact the air has to travel much further to get to the engine.

I wouldn't have thought it would make much difference either way!

i would have said it was the worst place to add a scoop being in the roof as from experiance, water and mud would get sucked straight in, maybe i'm wrong but if you hit a good water crossing too fast it may be in the lump before you know it

I think the look is good but the water will be up that windscreen PDQ.
I turn my snorkel round when off road to avoid trees and water 8O
I guess if you can get the water trap to work big time it would be ok.
I like your thinking though 8)

yeah i know what your saying , but i dont throw myself into deep water. i do go in deep but gently.
im talking top of bonnet wipers area deep . but not over the roof.also if i have it top of screen i can see when im close to drowned
this is my everyday car so i dont plan to go extreme in it but i do play hard i guess for a drive to work car

i would think a trap would catch any water im thinking if i go lower inside the footwell then back up to the air filter and a water bag - bottle draining off the lowest point i should be ok on the water side of things

would be good to see some pics when you get that far buddy

Zippy

i would go for some thing a bit more rigid than a bag just in case it gets vcumed into the pipes by all that air! their is a fair amount of suction at the air intake!

But i still think what we are basicaly talkig about is a snorkel, and all the rammed air will do 9as in the front facing intake of a safari snorkel will make up for all the lost air by the back pressure of a maize of pipe work.

And What aboutwhen its raining when your driving down the motorway?

I had a snorkel on my mav and never had a prob with rain getting to the engine. What little got into the intake didnt go past the filter box.
When off road just turned the intake round!
Yesterday I was watching the rain (which was persisting down) go up the windscreen. Not much of it really does!
So I still think you'll be ok with a water trap .
So there

see since i thought about it i have watched the rain too...
and i cant see a problem with rain

im really only concerned if i shove too much air in, the ecu could tell the engine to shove more fuel in, then i might have a truck thats too fast for me 8O 8O 8O

update too... i have all the parts except the 3" flexible hose

found a friendly breakers, cost so far 7 pounds. i estimate the hose will cost 25.00 so total cost should be 32.00
unless something goes wrong

im very confidant i can sort the water problem out. i was really only worried about too much air.
its as you know a major depreciation to the truck if i cut a hole in the roof. for it not to work

i have all the bits now except the hose , i have been looking at this

i recon i need 2 and a bit meters, do you know much about this product or can you recommend something else. dont forget if its running through the cab it needs to look nice ish

basically i have a scoop for outside the roof, an old sump shape air box cover for inside the roof as a water catchment point. this already has a 3 inch hose fitting 1.5 inches above the bottom so the air hose will run off this. so i could take in 1.5 inches of water into the sump before im in trouble but this will have a 15-20mm water drain off either going outside or into a vented water bottle below glove box.

the roof scoop has a bar to stop the rain running straight off the screen into the sump so im only looking at rain or slashes going in anyway

but for added security i expect to have to drop the air hose down then back up to create a water trap within the hose this too will go into the vented water bottle

I guess with the hose running inside it doesnt need to be so rufty tufty. You may find it a bit noisy and cold!
You may need to lag it! You can get fancy neoprene insulation as used in the pub trade!
Should be ok I think. What you using for the roof scoop?

ok well dont laugh... but after spending hours in the scrappy . and only finding something suitable for the inside water sump. looking for parts i could modify.
and with most- all bonnet roof scoops being around 11 inches deep too big cos of the sun roof... you only have 5-6 inches of roof to go in

i spent a couple of hours in the containers on site too but nothing suitable

then in wilco's today i noticed a small baking tray that has the right curves etc that will look really good once modified...
now i know your all thinking its a crap idea but if you forget its original purpose its not so bad , plus if it does fail and i do get stuck up a mountain with a dead truck at least i will have something i can cook some beans in.

another option would be

just leave a light out and use chrome grills to stop leaves etc and look like its all right

but id prefer a scoop and i think it will look cool

Any chance your friendly breaker might have a terrano bonnet you could cut the scoop off. That WOULD look cool 8)

yes but it would attract water and it points up for rain to go in then parked up, my scoop will point slightly down to take cold air off the screen area... i hope to really max the air in and see what happens

Gotcha good thinkin, cold air denser too so should make for bigger bang 8O Well it does on petrol anyway :p

does on a diesel too hence the intercooler but will i get colder than the intercooler.

i hope to just get more air , if its colder thats good .

but then will i push in more than the turbo could suck naturally

its all unknown to me im just hoping for more perfomance as an extra

the main idea is a raised air intake initially for deeper crossing

i have not seen a snorkel that looks like its meant to be there. i dont think its possible on the outside

You're right there mate. I'm not well up on intercolder things but I dont think you'll actually be able to RAM in too much air. You'd probably just get some buffering in the tube, a bit like interferance. Unless you put a big supercharger type bird sucking scoop up there 8O
