Hello. I recently joined this forum to research about a terrano i have been interested in. I have found the forum extremely helpful.
My problem is not directly related to terranos but more of seeking a bit advice as im sure there are many on here who have gone through the process of dealing with car traders.
I looked at a terrano that was advertised in the autotrader and was happy with the vehicle so put a deposit down to then be able to pick it up on the coming weekend.
My problem is that it was advertised to have a new m.o.t but this was not discussed at the time of viewing. I got the asking price knocked down by £200 because of a few minor things wrong with the vehicle. Today i phoned to confirm it would have a new m.o.t when collected as advertised as i forgot to check on the day but was told it wouldn't because i was getting it cheaper and if i didn't want it anymore i could get my deposit back as there has been a lot of interest for it so they could easily sell it to someone else.
So really i need to know where i stand in this situation. I am still really keen to buy the vehicle but with the m.o.t running out in February 2013 i am a little concerned.
Should i just except that i should of discussed this on the day so its my fault or should i agree to pay the full asking price to get the new m.o.t to save any surprises come February.
Im sorry to have such a long first post. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Take your deposit and walk away...

When we were looking, one garage said it had a warranty, and a free drive you home insurance, then when we asked about it, suddenly the car was too old for either... We had driven 150 miles to get it by then, and they thought they had us. Then I spotted the electrics under the bonnet had been messed with, the rear door could not be opened... a nasty graunch when on full lock (I now know this is nothing to worry about) and so it went on. They refused to sort any of it out, and told us the same as you, they would have no problem selling it.. we called their bluff, went else where, and they still had it for sale 3 months later...

It is a buyers market out there, so don't let them try and tell you otherwise, and while an MOT put on by a garage will most likely be "bent" anyway, as we found out when we did finally by one, at least the car has the ability to be taxed so you can then use it and sort things out as you go.

Not sure what your budget is, but we were only looking around the 2 grand mark, and there were many to look at once we started looking, nearly all of which were actually in better condition that the first one we looked at.

As said get your money back and walk away theres plenty out there force his hand he may mot even with the 200 quid off at the end of the day he wants your cash
Cheers andy
And welcome

Whats the info on the truck, cost age and so on. Then we can help more.
We know more about costs then the dealers and can advise on good truck. :thumbs

Get your money back. Even with 12 months mot there may be a lot of advisories which will need fixing. So always see the cert and look for the advisories. Ther's plenty more out there. David.

Thanks for the speedy advice.
It is a 52 plate terrano 3.0 di sve. Advertised for £2200.
My budget is £2000.
I was thinking this was a good price as it has 82000 on the clock and i have not seen any others this cheap. It dose have a few battle scars on the outside, such as scuffed bumpers and big scratch on the bonnet but these were mentioned on the advert.
I had the price knocked down due to the sunroof not working and a bit of paint on the rear seat that was not visible in the advert photos.
It drives very well and the engine sounds perfect so as i would be using it for work i didn't mind the tatty bits.
I was thinking i could offer to meet the trader in the iddle and pay an extra 100 to have the m.o.t done but after the advice i am now thinking perhaps i should get back my deposit and walk away.
I really do like this model and doubt i will find another with the same spec for the price and would be happy to sort out the minor things myself over time.
I am stuck at what to do!

My truck had a full mot and tbh if it wasn't 100 miles away I might have gone back to the test station the trader used and thrown a right round of f@*ks at them, there were various bushes and problems u've since had to sort, mised them at time as I was just looking for rust as that was my only major concern

I'd bide UR time and look t loads before making your mind up, there are bloody tons about

eBay has an abundance of them with about 10 new ones a week coming on

In my humble opinion, I'd not by a tatty 3.0 it's sounds cheap and could well be a money pit

The 3.0 is not quite the bomb proof motor that the 2.7 is.

Just my 2p

I bought a cheap '02 and its cost me an extra £500 to put it right, that's just parts and I did it myself, if I was a punter going to a garage could have been more like £1500

Tbh it's pretty damn mint now tho :p

I should mention that it is a 3dr. I only have space outside my house for a 3dr. I initially looked for a terrano as i have used them in a previous job as a company vehicle and was impressed with the performance and to have a bit more power and economy with the 3.0 would make all the difference in my line of work.
I get the impression now that perhaps i should not rush into a purchase and wait for something similar to come along.
Its a 2 hour trip to the garage to pick up my deposit but i fear if i ask for a check in the post i might be waiting a long time.

After what you have just said.....WALK AWAY!

Dont go for the 3.0 either look for a 2.7TDI better engine and it will run on cooking oli at £1 a Ltr the 3.0 Ltr wont.

For £2000 you will find a better one, but to be honest your looking at the wrong time of year now as they go up due to the bad weather on its way.

I picked up a 2000 SE+ For £1,500 and had a few bits to sort out, but being on here helped as the advice soon sort problems out.

I can get a full MOT (12 months) as i know a tester, so dont think its a dun deal if it has one.

Make sure it will go into 4 wheel drive as its a common fault they dont, an easy fix but gets you £££s off. Check the clocks work correctly as this is another common fault on 2000 to 2002 trucks (As iv found out). the sils are another bit to look at a rot sets in and although not an MOT fail welding is going to be needed soon.

A quick look on EBay found this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nissan-Terrano-2-TDi-Silver-5-Door-One-Owner-FSH-MOT-11months-No-Reserve-/140884118711?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item20cd590cb7
just shop around.:clap

be very carefully as between 1999- on they had problems with speedo so was replaced with new 1 with 0 on the clock so might look like low miles but could be over 150,000miles:eek:

Thanks i am very impressed with the response from everyone.
I need a 4x4 for a new work contract i am taking on and it has to be a swb to be able to park outside my house. I will be towing chippers and occasionally a tracked chipper on a trailer so was thinking the extra towing capacity of the 3.0 will keep me nice and legal.

can i ask what age are you ! you might not be able to tow up to the max weight anyway ?:nenau

Im 28 but have a towing licence. I think that the the tracked chipper on trailer comes in just under 3 ton which is what led me to the 3.0.
I have some basic mechanical knowledge and when driven and given a good looking over it seems very good. I checked with mycarcheck and it confirmed the mileage and the 2 previous owners.
It engages into 4 wheel drive high and low fine and drives without any wines or other unwanted noises. I really dose drive really nice and revs clean and smooth.
The dealer said it was priced with the scratches etc in mind hence the low price. I would hate to miss out on a bargain but at the same time i could do without a huge bill come m.o.t time.
Being a garage that dose m.o.t's i would have thought if the dealer was confident in the vehicle he would just put a new one on so this leads me to think that perhaps he knows there will be work needed to be done.
Should i offer to pay for the m.o.t if it sails through or should i just walk away with my deposit. I could even ask for deposit back and see if he back tracks.
Im still un-sure about what to do!

Walk away even if they do mot it for you if he is pally with his mot bloke i bet he could get a ticket on a 3 legged pony

im probably not the best person to reply to this considering my history on buying vehicles , but then again .......

in my humble opinion , if a garage that presumably does m.o.t.'s them selves arent confident enough in providing a full m.o.t. ( dodgy or not ) on a vehicle they themselves are selling ....... then i have to ask why ...... alarm bells are ringing here ....... but of course i could be wrong .

just my humble opinion

Deffinately dont want a 3.0 for a work horse, also a caravan pulling chap i know with a 3.0 said he has to go everywhere in 4th gear when towing with his 3.0 as the gearing is all to cock compared to his old 2.7:nenau
