Did apply voltage to the starter motor, it could be the relay contacts are not well.
A diagram was with the link I posted

Try splashing you red jump lead on the other terminal the one that has the short wire going into the motor, this by passes the switch in the solenoid, if the motor spins then just replace the solenoid, be careful to get a good fitting screwdriver, they will be tight and the heads strip out easy, Rick

tried that, still no joy!

ordered a new starter motor today - needed to tell the guy the part no so he could confirm he had the correct motor and he has. £68 delivered. Cant argue with that for a new starter.

15 volts ????? WTF

how come when I had my Vectra c my battery was reading 12.6 volts and it wouldn't start. but all the lights came on and they did'nt dim when trying to start . so I called green flag and they told me diesel engines need around 15 volts in a battery to turn it over . ? so I went and got a new battery and it started fine after that

No car battery will ever show 15 volts at rest - the bloke lied to you simples.
12.6 volts is a very good battery - its brand new spec in terms of voltage but there are other issues that might explain why a new battery fixed you.
What a diesel battery needs is higher cranking amps this is the ability to maintain a high current without a large voltage drop as it is turning your engine over.
Your old battery might have been OK for volts but crap at producing amps.

Your alternator will charge at between 13.8-14.4 volts depending on the state of charge of the battery.

Car batteries are based on the original Leclanche formula and consist of six cells in series each on being 2.1 volts giving you the total of 12.6 volts. This voltage is set by the chemistry of the lead acid combination. If you have a single dead cell this reduces the voltage to 10.5 volts and that's not enough to crank your engine.

Over the years the design has been tinkered with by trying to reduce sulphonation that cause cell voltage to drop over time.

Many manufacturers now use a sealed gel instead of sulphuric acid in the cells.
Probably the best current design is AGM (absorbed glass matt ) the main advantage of these is they take much longer to discharge over time so are suited to vehicles that are not used regularly.

Hey, you're in huddersfield! If you can get the truck to Harrogate, I have a garage here waiting! I would offer to come out, but my beastie still doesn't start! Lmao!

cheers buddy, really appreciate the offer but there aint no way the Terrano is moving!! Got the old starter out now, just need to fit the new one when it arrives next week - thankfully fitting one is far easier than taking one out!

Then I need to check my fuel line.....

other than that, I should be back on the road I hope.

again, thankyou for the offer:thumbs
