Yep, had to do a couple small finishing off jobs, couple of hours at the most, then went to the electrical wholesalers before heading home with the intension of starting on Harlowmavs motor, came out from the shop and got the dreaded clicking starter solenoid and nothing more, so thought must be battery ( but it is fairly new) anyway did the normal headlights on try starter sure enough lights dimmed a lot, so popped the bonnet before looking for the jump leads and noticed the spray grease on the battery terminals was glistening touched them and they were hot, checked the battery terminal at the starter also hot, realise now it is the starter, no need for jump leads, I need a snatch, never a motor about when you want one, any way eventually got a tug and headed home, removed starter and stuck the jump leads on the motor side, nothing except the clamp meter said 850 amps, wow, could not imagine what could cause this other than clearly the armature was not turning, stripped it all out and on my one the gear end of the armature is on needle rollers which had broken up so it was jambed on the side casing, armature goosed, bearing casing goosed, all the others that I have has a bush not rollers, cleaned em all up and in the morning will select the best bits and remake a starter, Rick

There was certainly nothing you could have done about preventing that one.
It is not through neglect or poor maintenance.
I hate people who call out the AA for running out of petrol etc.

Hope you can soon get it sorted, and haven't given all your good bits away to fellow members... lol...

unfortunately the petrol starter is not the same, and I only have one tdi scrapper and the starter came of that to go on the off roader a while ago Slindon mud does a fine job of killing them, but I have the makings of two spare ones so must have acquired another at some time, that is why I got all my old bits together and cleaned them all up to do a mix and match tomorrow, my only real question is the coms on the two spare armatures, not sure they are up to the job, if not then my one could go in the lath and have a sleeve fitted to fit the bush in a good housing, Rick

Eeeek!!!
Hope you get it sorted soon Rick.
So is it the starter on the petrol motor that has gone caput!
Has any other members out there got a starter for Rick?

No do not run a petrol any more, all three are Tdi, but have 4 petrol scrapper motors with starters but as said not the same, but I do have a 3 in the workshop, could nick the starter from that:rolleyes::rolleyes: Rick

I think that you may find the one in your workshop has a different starter what with being a 3.0 litre 😜

You are probably correct but was worth a thought:), anyway once fixed will be lifting yours to have a look round, Rick

mobile again

OK thought I would take some pics of the rebuild of my starter, there are 13 in all and I post them one at a time as I can comment on each one, this is my old failed armature with worn end and no rollers, do not know what happened to them bar the one that I found

to enable the brushes to be fitted you need a socket or tube a little larger than the com then it can be maneuvered over the com and slid down

last item the solenoid, this pulls the bendix into mesh and operates the contactor in the end to supply power to the motor
