I'm going to need to replace brake pads soon, so popped into my local Halfrauds to see what they had.

They list 2 types of pad, one for a Lucas system and one for another braking system I've not heard off - sounds Japanese in origin. I've had a quick look under the bonnet but can't see anything obvious in terms of what system my wagon has got fitted. I don't want to assume Lucas if it isn't the case.

Short of removing a pad and comparing with what Halfrauds have on the shelf, how can I tell what system I've got?

Have a look at http://www.brakesint.co.uk/index.html go to the online catalogue and you will see there are 3 listed more than likely you will have the ones with the springs on top, if you click on the image of the pad it will give you the dimensions.

But to be 100% you will need to pop one out and have a look.

Thanks, at least with an online resource I can look and see what I need at home, instead of having to take the pad elsewhere.

like toolbox says i also think it will be the spring top type, these you can see through the caliper easliy enough if i'm correct

Both right guys, was the Lucas type pads, really easy job to do as well. Saved a bit of cash in terms of labour charges compared to getting them done at the service in a week or two.
