brake disc replacement

does the brake caliper carrier have to be removed to take off hub/disc assembly the two bolts on mine are pretty seized 18mm socket doesn't seem correct size either does anyone know what the correct size bolt they are have got a butane plumbers type torch would this help to heat up the carrier before trying to shift the bolts many thanks.... bill

Cant remember but think size is 19mm its def not 18.Ive removed loads never needed to heat one .It will need to come off to replace the disc

They are 19mm I tried to undo mine yesterday when I did the cv boob but like everything on this car they were solid and couldn't move them.

Leverage is the key:thumb2
try a long breaker bar if you can get it in.
I would also try using an Impact socket as it the 6 sides and gets a better grip on the faces to prevent rounding:thumb2

I need to find the bolts for mine :doh

I'd get some penetrating stuff on it, a longer bar, bit of scaffy pole is my fav (you'll get more space if you turn the hub, same as you would with the wheels), failing that it'd be heat, but the wee plumber ones don't do much in my experience

Interesting stuff but what is acetone and any idea where to get it from, does it really work because every bolt I try to undo give me trouble :doh

Acetone, is what makes up most nail varnish removers, so you might have some in the ladies make up.

Caution.
Acetone can disolve plastic or man made fibres... and is very flammable

Alex and I will try this tomorrow as I have pure acetone and brake fluid, but in all honesty I cannot see it working, I have yet to see anything that dissolves rust, Rick
