i still think a poll like adz posted is a good idea on options

sorry guys ... i totaly disagree with the fix for now...

my view is if the engine is dead or past repair. then id go with the popular vote...

but its not dead . its just making the odd noise... and a noise no one can actually say what is causing it...

my vote is... just kin drive it , and enjoy it . if it blows then look at whats left. only then can you decide to fix it.
you got nothing to loose. you might even find its not going to go bang and its something totally innocent making the noise

daved is right what happens when more goes wrong

I spoke to the garage a short while ago, it isn't good news Pete :(

They still seem to think the noise is either number 3 of 4 big end about to let go. As the garage is well over 100 miles from me there is no way I can get over there and have a look for myself.

We have £149 still left in Briggie's fund and I have received pledges from members here who have offered more if we can see a way forward.

There are two options here, either sell the truck as is and try and recoup some of the loss or, see if we can raise enough to source a secondhand engine and get Pete mobile again.

It would be nice to see this one to the end and get Pete back on the road. Due to the distance I can not offer any physical help but am more than happy to put another £25 in the pot.

If anyone else has any other options please do shout up but, for obvious reasons, time is of the essence here.

seen the garages diagnosis ?

Workshop free use

It is probably not a lot of use as I am on South Coast but I can offer a workshop and fitter for free to change briggies engine over, I may even be able to transport his motor down here given a little time, Regards Rick:thumb2

if it does " let go " im really foofed
why your not driving it now . so you are no more stuck with it dead or alive.

the offer of the fitting in the south east is a very good offer, despite my view on spending out more on it. before she actually blows

I agree. I would just drive the fooking thing. I bought my wife an old 2.5L petrol Jeep Cherokee a few years back for £900. This had the same knocking sound when we got it (I suspected engine bearings) so I just stuck some molyslip into the oil and it just kept going for years and years until the wife wanted a newer car.

The only downside is if it does totally give up then Briggie is stuck as my understanding is that he has used his quota of recoveries?

Can't we put some of the £149 left in the pot towards joining him to another recovery service? That way Briggie is mobile while a more comprehensive plan can be put together just in case the engine gives up. You never know, it might just run and run.

Pleased to contribute to the fund again if required though.

Just my two pence worth!

Ian.

Excellent idea, hadnt thought of that one :thumb2

dont forget, if Briggies truck dies on him half way to Bodmin Moor or something, hes screwed for many reasons, mainly HE CANT WALK FAR. so hows he gonna get out to help himself? This is why he has to trust it, the car must be his legs. Imagine how it must have been for him on the motorway when it broke down first time. getting out must have been horrendous, so I shudder to think how it would go if he continued to drive it as is, and it did blow, say stuck in traffic on the M1. He cant just hop out and get things moving. Its an effort i cant imagine, for Pete to mobilse himself, hes a strong chap yes, but hes got a lot of work to do just to walk a few meters.

I wish it was something simple with the engine, but it doesnt sound like it?

Surely this gives a strong push to the notion of a replacement engine. I know we can say 'what will break next?', but Briggie's truck is, like most of our own vehicles, of a certain age so it's a risk we can all apply to our own trucks. Has anybody given the rest of Sally a look-over? If so, what was the verdict? I still suspect the diagnosis may be wrong but given this incredibly kind offer it might be cheaper/ quicker/ easier to just pop in a new block rather than investigate further. Just my throw into the mix. :)

perhaps this fitter could give sally the once over too ?

the mot says summat about brake pipes , so i know about that , plus the windscreen , but as for anything else ... clive has crawled under it and taken pics ( see i met pete and sally thread ) but as for a techincal inspection i dunno

Seconded - cheapest option by far for now is change your breakdown provider and drive it until it breaks - I'll carry on harping about it til the cows come home but I'd eat my hat if a Nissan 2.7 diesel engine thats capable of doing 300,000-400,000 miles in a London taxi has busted a big end unless its been run without any oil in it.

But this is a 'nothing to lose' option and therefore a no-brainer.

Green Flag drive you back home if its out of hours, then collect the car again in the morning and take it to a garage.

Failing that, buy an old MPV, plenty of reliable ones around and they do everything you need except 4x4, but you can't have everything in this life.
