My battery doesn't hold a charge well, if i don't use it for a few days it doesn't start. This is only going to get worse now the dark nights are drawing in and I'm using the T2 less and the lights and fans more. Plus I am usually towing so it has to run the trailer lights too.

Question: best place to get a decent new battery?
 
They have a good price and delivery but a bit small, could do with 95Ah at least for T2 and trailer. David.

Yes, I agree, I was thinking more like 100ah too. I also have a CB and charge all kinds of gadgets on the go as I rarely have access to mains electricity.

Dilemma 2:

The earth lead has been extended to suit my present battery so I can't be sure of the terminal lay out. My battery is on the front left of the engine bay (when facing the car with the bonnet open) It has both terminals facing the front (headlight/radiator) and the earth is on the left (wing side)

If anyone has a late 2.7 TDI could they describe theirs or better still post a photo? Thanks :thumb2
 
I have a 1999 T2, and the battery is in the same place as yours... Drivers side behind headlight.

The terminals are on the rear of the battery, Negative nearest wing, positive is on the engine side.

It is 110ah and 1000cca, plus it should be good for when i have to plug my caravan in to run the lights when my generator runs out of juice.

The dimensions are slightly larger than a standard battery at l330 x d 172 x H242 (to top of terminals). The height is the most tricky part, do you think it will fit? I have measures up and it seems OK to me :nenau

Are the terminals oriented correctly for a standard fit?

The terminals are correct... I do not really know enough about the difference between car and leisure batteries, but was under the impression that leisure can't provide the high currents that are needed for winter starting... Might be worth waiting until one of the other guys who does know about batteries before committing to that one.

no such thing as a leisure battery, it is a start battery called something different, flatten it and it will loose a large percentage of its capacity, flatten it repeatedly and it will soon die, take em apart as I have, thin multiple plates, carbon fibre, calcium etc they are all terms used to confuse, start batteries can last many years if engine starts easily so little is drawn, batteries die soon on hard to start motors, true deep cycle batteries have plates many times thicker than start batteries and therefore cost much more, Rick

The one I am looking at is intended for campers, it is for starting the engine as well as running the lights so it is in fact a starting battery. But I can get one at a decent price (around £80) and they have a 3 year warranty.

Solarman, I was thinking that these may also be good winch batteries, the twin terminal have to be an advantage for wiring up. I have checked numax, but they seem the same sort of price and their equivalent battery is straight sided at the base so will not fit the clamp for holding it down :nenau

Does anyone have any comments on the size of it fitting the in the standard battery space? :nenau
 
I always seem to be one the wrong side of Rick on this subject. I have a Numax big boy dual fuel leisure marine starter battery thingy, or what ever Rick says it is :lol It's straight sided but I just made a top strap thing to bolt it down with. It aint move at any of my driving angles :sly:augie
It's 1000 cca and 113 amp hours I think. It's been used and abused for a couple of years now and runs my gadget laden T2 and the winch :clap
So far so good, no issues at all even in the winter before last at -15 C :cool:
It was about £95 delivered.

maybe I am being a little harsh, but having been a narrow boat owner living on battery power one realises the very big difference between start batteries and traction batteries, start batteries you can only discharge to max 30% of capacity repeatedly (every day) traction batteries go to 80% every day for 15 plus years, Rick

It has been said that these lucas ones are re badged numax. and apparently the standars for testing changed recently. Under the old test the one i posted a link to comes out at 125ah and 113 under the new test. So it seems it may be the same battery.
So, my question is, given the dimensions above, will it fit?
 
so basically, no one can be arsed to get a tape measure out and give me the benefit of their opinion? :nenau
 
Sorry, I missed that question.

My battery is
12" (30cm) wide
7" (18cm) front to back
8" (20cm) high, excluding terminals.

Because of the slope on the bonnet, at the front of the battery, it is nearly as high as it can go at 8", but at the rear, there is about 2" on top which allows for the terminals etc.

I think at a pinch, you could just squeeze a bit more than 12" in, but depth and height are on the tight side.
