Hi my disco developed a water leak around the top hose connection on radiator due to me forcing the cowl past it instead of removing top hose.
anyway it just cracked a bit of the solder so rather than re solder it I purchased the BARS LEAKS PRODUCT.
ive had success with it before and
IT WORKED JUST FINE AGAIN THIS TIME. :p
NOW to the reason ive posted this.
it says on the tin. inhibits rust and corrosion ,lubricates water pump .
(the compleat cooling system conditioner)
this tin does 12lts and costs £3 99. 135mls from halfords .
when you look on there web site they advise using this product even if you HAVE NOT got a leak as an aid to engine reliability.
"Would it make your water pump seal last a while longer"
it can be flushed out of the system

I HAVE NO CONNECTION WITH THIS FIRM
just thought it may be of use to someone

I sell this to a few customers (some of whom might not thank me for saying so, so I won't). They all seem to rate it highly.

Have used this a few times over the years, and as you say I can't fault it.

Paul.

When I used to work at Rolls Royce, we used to put Bars in the military engine packs (Rolls Royce Eagle Diesels) straight off the build line. In the harsh environments they were built for, it was quite possibly a life saver.

When ever I smell that stuff now, it takes me right back to when I was working there :)

I have had a few small daihatsu 4x4's and they suffer with cracked blocks, we added some to one of these and never looked back it went on and on and in the end we sold it still cracked!

Well it's also worked for me as I kept getting the odd drip from where the bottom hose from the rad to the engine when very cold

Well as well as a good garage guide
 we should start a good product guide
Thanks from me Ian

i've used bar leak in the past but a retired mechanic told me that it does work, but i can and often does slows the water flow around the heater matrix or even block it, i now, if nessessary use k-seal, although expensive it does'nt cause any problems and mixes with antifreeze ok,

THE OLD BARRS LEAKS PRODUCT WAS IN THE FORM OF A PELLET 2" LONG AND YOU CRUMBLED IT INTO YOUR RADIATOR ,I BELEAVE THIS WAS KNOWN TO CAUSE BLOCKAGES BUT THE NEW STUFF IS VERY SMALL PARTICULES SUSPENDED IN A BROWN GLOOPEY LIQUID .
ABOUT THE SAME CONSISTANCY AS SINGLE CREAM.
I CANNOT SEE THIS CAUSING PROBLEMS ,
CAN YOU IMAGINE THE COMEBACK IF THE PRODUCT CAUSED BLOCKAGES.

hi iandouglas, i have a few of the old type and they are like a 2" pellet
i hav'nt used bars leak for quite a few years now so i can't comment on it, but i would definately use k-seal, i've spoken to several people that have used as a get out of trouble remedly, so will see how it go's. awhile back a customer of mine had a radiator split while on holiday went to car shop they gave him bars leak, on his way home his car overheated, AA checked it and the radiator was partly blocked, took it to rad repairers and was told bars leak had blocked the core tubes, but they would say that i supose. :?

am sorry but this product is useless these days, IT WILL block your rad and/or heater matrixand i have seen a core blocked with this, you have to bear in mind modern Alu Rads have much smaller waterways than the ones that were in grandads morris 1100 the same goes for engine waterways they will block better to fix it properly not bodge it

hi cssuk.
well its been in the Disco a couple of weeks now ,stopped the leak around the top hose connection although the joint was not loose .
the container size was up to 12 ltr capacity wich the Disco is.
temp gauge indication as always been.
heater working fine.
Remember what it says on the tin (its a cooling system conditioner)
lubricates water pump + guards against corrosion .designed to be used before a leak occurs .
MIND YOU IT IS A LR DISCOVERY SO BUILT ON SAME PRINCIBLE AS
GRANDADS MOGGIE MINOR.
Its done the job for now next time its in for work i will think again.
I used this in my terrano when the heater matrix went and it lasted through the winter and heater still worked.

The nature of bars leak stop,is to block up partail holes.
Therefore if you have a rad in need of a flush, or matrix, and you use a leak stop then yes it will block up the already partailly block rad, obviously!

The old original Barrs aleaks pellet was designed to be crumbled up and put into your top hose not direct into the rad - Also if you have a leak and no barrs leaks or anything else try 2 teaspoons of curry powder in your rad - you will stink like a curry house but it will seal the rad Honest guv it will!!!

What RR site did you work at, I'm based at inchinnan now that Hillington has closed down.
Been with them for 22yrs now.

No takin the p*** honest!

NO taking the piss Lacroupade honest - if you have a leaky rad and you dont have anything else stick in a couple of teaspoons of curry powder - One of my old drivers car rad started leaking just about the time of year you put in antifreeze ( afew years ago now) and he was in a hurry to get to hospital to see his daughter who had just given birth and phoned me up asking what to do , I told him put in 2 teaspoons of curry powder and it would be all right - it was and he had the car for another 5 years before he sold it and it was still the same rad and the chap who bought it kept it for another few years and he had no problem either with it . Only down side was for first few days whn it got hot it smelt like a curry house but it works, if you are brave enough try it and see.it even held with the anti freeze cant be bad!
