Anybody who has done and Aux Battery install in a Patrol... Where on earth did you find a battery tray to fit? Australia seems to have plenty!

I did consider a universal one, but I'm concerned that it won't offer enough support!

Any help would be appreciated. :thumb2

Make your own or get one from Oz. Most aftermarkets go behind the airbox over the passenger wheel arch.

What you wanting to do with your aux battery? If it's just for a winch I wouldn't bother just don't winch with the engine off :nenau

Winch, Work Lights and in time, maybe a Fridge.

I already have the Battery and Split Charge System I used in my Land Rover, so it would be a shame not to get them installed!

I have fitted one in my project truck. Can buy a commercially made universal tray which is what LazyFerrret fitted to his Terrano. My son made one for me which works just fine. Have power sockets in the boot and run my work lights off the battery so far. It's great to be able to camp and use the 12 v without wondering if the car will start.

Are you still in need of a battery tray.

I have this if it's any use to you.

Dimensions are.......... 325mm long, 180mm wide, 190mm deep

Thanks Pete, I'll have a measure tomorrow, see if it will work. :thumbs

Here's my setup if Petes box doesn't do the job.
Two heavy duty powder coated brackets under the battery. Drilled and fixed to take two standard hold downs.
120amp leisure battery.

No such thing as a leisure battery, it is a start battery simple, Rick

leisure battery

I was told by a local firm, Anglia Batteries, been there 40 years, that leisure batteries will not deliver enough to start an engine but will give high drain for longer.
I of course said 'what's the catch', he said 'both the same price'.
He also said if the main battery goes flat connect the two together for a while to charge the flat one from the leisure.
You know this stuff Rick was I the victim of a 'snow job' [London slang when I was a lad, 1950's, for bullshit] or is it basically true?

Surely the two would equalise but surely easier to use jump leads between them and and start that way. Mind you if you were clever enough you would use correct grade of cables when fitting and even an old fashioned starter solenoid with a switch on your dashboard which will pretty much replace the use of jump leads.

Now waiting for Rustic to jump in and comment here:thumbs

This is what I plan to do... Did it on my Land Rover and it worked a treat! :thumbs

The proof is in the construction, so cut both apart and check the plate thickness of each, you will not find much difference if any, now cut open a traction battery, and you will see the plates are possibly 10 times thicker, this is also what a leisure battery should look like but because the plates are so much thicker you will get far less amp hours out of it size for size, so it is easy to differentiate between a start battery and a leisure, for a given physical size say you get 110 amp hours from the start battery, you will only get 11 amp hours from a proper leisure, but you will only have around 30 amp hours available from the start before damage is done, whereas the leisure will be able to deliver 80% every day for 10 to 15 years, hope this helps, Rick

Thanks Rick, next time I will get a start battery, dave

You can of course go the gell battery route, but a true high discharge battery (80 %) will make your eyes water, but they are worth it in the right conditions, Rick
