Well Ive been thinking with all our members there must be some of you that would like to find out if there are any green lanes around where you live, and wondering how to go about finding them.
If you need help with map reading and understanding the map markings
indicating the lane types printed below .
JUST ASK THATS WHAT I DID.
There are maps on line from multi map, street map
once you have found them you can do a google search and find out the history of many of them.
Remember a lot of these lanes were the motorways of yesteryear.
unloved, forgotten,,, lost.
There are BYWAYS. aka b.o.a.t.s (Byways open to all traffic)
There are U.C.R ...(unclassified roads)
There are O.R.P.A ...(other route public access)
.................................................
These are the green lanes we are legally allowed to drive .
...........................................................................
Unless there is a T.R.O. ..(temp restriction order )
placed by the highways dept for various reasons like erosion /damage ,
...........................................................................
One other type of lane called a R.U.P.P......(road used as public path)
Was lost to us due to government legislation.called the NERC bill.
so Rupp's were re classified and aether up graded to BYWAY statius
or down graded and re named ( RESTRICTED BYWAY ).
..........................................................................
Which cannot be driven by motorised transport,
other than by farmer etc to reach his land .
ITS up to you to find out what lanes you can/cannot drive .
you contact your county council they have whats known as the
"DEFINITIVE MAP " and up to date info.
Also some libraries keep a copy of the Definitive map.

Just to add to that Ian,the laws in Scotland are different to those in England.
There are lanes but not many!
Access laws are to strict up here! In my opinion

The laws aren't actually that different in Scotland than in England & Wales. The main reasons why there are so few lanes in Scotland are more to do with ..........

* The National Parks and Countryside Act 1949 that created definitive maps in England & Wales did not apply to Scotland - so there is no official public register of rights of way. They are, therefore, harder to find and information about them is not easily available to the general public.

* There are simply far fewer people and far fewer roads of any kind in Scotland than there are in England & Wales.

* The pattern of land ownership in Scotland is different. Much of the land is held as large estates in the hands of very few powerful landowners. The balance of power between landowners and local authorities is very different.

There are about 140 vehicular rights of way on the Scotways database - many of which are also recorded on Wayfinder.

Cheers
Andrew

Thanks Ian... interesting and needing more investigation ( or I could just steal a copy of your map for most of the lanes close to me! ) Was saying to Caroline on Derby Heather Day.... if we werent following you then we wouldnt have thought allowed to drive in these places....its a whole new world!!

Chris

hi gromit,

not to sure about lanes in m/side but think there are some on wirral and
southport way, for the adventurous theres a tidal causeway across

morcambe bay and of course youre not far from north wales which is
renowned for row, that i ve done any of them but are on my wish list.

we have a member jonathanm in your region keen offroader that has
done many of these routes.

Hi, Ian has very kindly told me how to access and work the Wayfinder site, which now I have an idea how it works is very interesting, been looking round the local runs and making plans for runs further a field. Thanks to every one in helping out a newbie who now is having great fun driving again.
Geoff.

I would love to give green landing a go but worry that if I got stuck there's nothing I could do due my back problem, plus not having no one to go with would be dangerous. Might look for some gentle lanes :lol

I realise this is an old post, but I am interested in finding any interesting "off road" bits around me. Does anyone have any maps of Essex showing the green lanes?
Ian

I'd be interested in any lanes round me.
I'm ollerton, Notts.

Have a look on your local council's web site for a Rights of way section as they should be shown on that & the good old OS maps is another great place to hunt down legal lanes:thumbs

That's the wrong answer unless you want a section 59 slapped on you:doh most councils have their ROW's somewhere on their web site:augie

Alex,
It is your constitutional right to ask and be provided with a definitive rights of way map.
It's not secret, classified, just some brain dead prat who couldn't be a###d.
Having said that not many green lanes in the middle of a city, but if you are near real green countryside, they are there.
Just driving on a lane and finding out could be illegal or damaging (to your machine or the lane).
Get the real info, then have a go.......:thumb2

Just ring the council for the area you are interested in and tell them you would like to see the definitive map of the area. They will put you through or give you the number for the department you need.
Speak to them and make an appointment to view the map.
Take with you an OS map and transfer the legal routes onto your map.
A lot of councils now have the map to view online.
It's the drive it and see attitude that leads to closures and giving us a bad name.
I've spent years building up the knowledge of the areas I drive and will continue to do so the proper way.

What's your local council called Alex ? as i'll have a look on their web site for you:augie
