Anyone part of a gun club?

So me and the missus have been speaking, and we have a certain amount of interest in fire arms it seems.

If Anyone has a gun license and or is part of a gun club could you share any info please.

Just found out from my dad that I fired a 357 magnum and a very old russian handgun when I was very young :lol

Also having a main family member around guns when I was young may have been an influence

I'm trying to find out how difficult it is to obtain a certificate, and how difficult it is to buy and maintain your own weapon, I'm sure they cut down on most types of guns many years ago.

I've got a shotgun licence and being part of the farming community and an agricultural lawyer I do actually know a bit about this.

You can get a shotgun licence or a firearms (ie.rifles) licence.

Neither are particularly easy to get but a shotgun licence is a bit easier due to the limited range of shotgun pellets compared with a bullet.

You have to pay a fee (around £40/£50 for a shotgun licence I think) and they have to be renewed every 5 years.

You have to have a good reason for having either type of licence and you will have to identify somewhere where you have permission and will be able to use any shotgun or firearm. You also must operate any gun according to the gun safety rules.

If you plan to own a shotgun or rifle you need to have a lockable and secure gun cabinet installed in your home where the gun is kept when not being used (ammo doesn't need to be secured).

You have to get someone of standing to vouch for you and act as a reference when you apply - as a lawyer I've done this before for clients and friends.

You will get interviewed at your home by the police and they will check the gun cabinet (if applicable). The referee will most likely also be interviewed although usually just over the phone.

If the police are satisfied then they will grant your licence.

You will have to produce the licence every time you purchase a gun or ammo.

I did read something about your floppy idler on the other thread.


Re guns, I had heard that if you are a member of a gun club, and keep the gun on their premises then getting a licence is easier...
but this is from memory...

Re keeping gun on club that was my thought but my father told me they become crim hotspots if all weapons are stored there. All be it years ago but he was Heathrow firearms for 9 years and met for 24 glock 17 and mp5 :naughty doesent look like I'll get to play with those though :doh

Haha no not atall, as much as Sometimes you would love to show them who's boss I would never carry a weapon with me, too risky and definately do not want to serve time.

I believe (if I'm right) it's the same law as driving to and from mot station.

You are only permitted to carry the gun to and from the club :thumb2
So I'd have to pick my road rage incidents at those very moments :augie

Used to shoot springers before I went to uni, mainly HFT locally and some UKHFT meets if I could get there! Never moved over to the PCP airguns, too expensive and not as much fun!

Have tried clay pigeon shooting and loved it, the bank didn't though...

Would love to get back into it once I qualify from this place!

Replying from Belgium, so probably not of much practical use for you, but here goes: I am part of a sport shooting club (clay pigeon shooting) and part of a small hunting syndicate. Hunting as in rough shooting, not the horse & hound variety.
As a result I regularly shoot with my shotgun and - a bit less regular, since only for hunting situations - with my rifle.
In fact my Terrano2 came with a DIY gun cupboard in plywood, as regulations here in Belgium oblige one to always transport a gun unloaded, with trigger lock, and not within reach. I recently bought the T2 for use while out in the fields, transporting pheasant feed, my dogs, and the occasional roe deer or wild board

One tip though: even if not mandatory in the UK, do get a gun/ammo safe. The bigger the better, since most likely you want more than 1 gun, and as sturdy as possible. Gives one peace of mind when not at home - I wouldn't want my guns to be lying around ready to be found byany visiting kid or burglar...

The uk laws are very strict but we are interested in getting involved. Once we move to bedfordshire we will likely join this club
