one thing i notice is that the rear sills seem to "join" just after the edge of the door if hat makes sense, the week spots are at the back, as you can see, but feel very solid after this "join" also feel solid up the sides.

if you can help, I can get the welding contraption and welder mask (mig welder) and tent up the car!! Hoping to have this done SOON as I then have to MOT it...

pity you are so far away, i would have done it for you, i had the same on my truck, it seem a bit daunting when you cant weld yourself, but try the yellow pages or thompson directory, you should find a mobile welder surely, inner and outer sill, both sides between £75-100 per side as rough estimate, remember it's the cleaning and preperation that takes the time. good luck clivvy, :thumbs

its funny. (not for you mind) petes one was undersealed as yours is. his is a total rust bucket too..

i recon while sealing them up they blocked the drain holes in the sills and they just rot from the inside out.
mine was never undersealed (except where ive cut it all down) and its spotless everywhere.

everyone i have seen are the same they just seem to rust if undersealed. either that or they didnt prep before doing it. or sealed wet in

bloody shame but i have my fingers crossed for you:thumbs

thnaks guys, its really odd, I just cant find a mobile welder locally! I must be looking wrong, 'cos I know they exist. I found a new garage just down my road this weekend, so ringing them on Monday...i can at least get the welding done there and drive home.

ok other place to try.

ask in the local motor factors, they usually know all the local mechanics and body shop people. lots stay anonymous as they tend to work for cash.

phone book / yellow pages. to find them

car breakers - they will know mechanics
agricultural / tractor workshop
metal fabricators
local forge

but try to visit once you have an address. its harder to say no if your there , and you might get to speak to one of the staff who might take the job on for cash

the trouble you will be up against is. lots of people can weld, but not many work on cars.
reason is . risk of fire, wiring melting, cars have thin metal and a real pain to weld nicely

hope this helps

Thanks Extreme, it does help. I certainly lack confidence in terms of convincing these sorts of guys, so god knows how I will get on!! First job Monday is ring that local garage, and book it in for them to look at Monday afternoon. If that fails, I will go down to a motor factors I know down in dodgy end of town as per your advice^

What part of Huddersfield are you? I am near Marsden and have been able to get welding done on my daughter's car sills with no problem.

I am Quarmby, dont get me wrong, PLENTY of garages around where I can get welding done. My problem is I cant legally drive, get the welding done then drive home. as well as welding, I hav ea failed MOT and parts that need replacing, to get it all done in one at garage prices is too expensive, I need mobile welder/mechanic to help me out of a tight spot, thats my point. Evey garage I have been to round here want to charge me SILLY money, and I am not going to be played like that.

I was upposed to have Larson over to do the welding today (club member here), but due to this damned weather he wasnt able to get his tools, so not sure if he can do any other weekends yet, which is why I am sounding out for more welders like him in case he cant do it in the next few weeks...

Sorry I didn't realise that was the case. But to put it in perspective, we were charged £70 for a piece about 30 ins long to be welded in at the garage where it failed its test.

its tricky for me. Problem is I SHOULD have at least got the welding done at the time, but he was convincing me it wasnt worth it, so I didnt!!

Anyway, now I have found that things aint as bad as the mech said, and the welding isnt that bad. Its approx 40CM's long by 10 max each side. He did claim a third peice, not thats a small hole in the inner wing under the bonnet, which has obviously been filled before and its just peeled away. Its solid if I am honest, so I have filled it with filler and will treat it etc etc..
My problem is they did a full MOT and failed it, rather than the PRE Mot I requested. So now I cant drive around to get the best deal on welding/parts, because knowing my luck, i'd get pulled and done by the police. :(

hmm...turns out my little brother can weld. has been welding trucks for years (as in rigid trucks, but hey whats the difference when it comes to welding?). He says he can have a bash end of month. Also, my mate just got in touch, he has a guy a short drive away who will give me a price this weekend, but thats risky in terms of "the law" if i get pulled, am screwed. still, getting somewhere slowly.

they should not have failed it, they were not quick fit or auto master or the like were they? you are allowed legally to drive it to a place of mot. there is also, no legal maximum distance you can travel for the said booked mot. why dont you book one at a garage with your welder in between, get it there and then cancel the mot? if you tell a garage that you need welding and it has no mot, they normally book it in so you can get it there for the work and dont worry about the mot. having said that once the work is done, you cant drive it back as it never had the mot to fail on in the first place.
or spead out to a place that will do it all at a reasonable price, then get it booked in to them. i know a person who posted a thread on another forum who was stopped by the police and he told them it was booked in at a place about 150 miles from where he was. they were going to arrest him, he rang his solicitor and then his solicitor told them that the law does not state a max or min distance to travel between mot station and you. the law is the law, and they could not arrest him nor take his car from him as it would have been unlawful. this is accurate, but ring the police and ask them if you want proof. just dont tell them your vehicle reg as no doubt you will be put on a watch list and spot checked every time th po po go past you. better still go in and ask.
THE CAR MUST BE TAXED AND INSURED, or they will get you for that.
richard

nope, wasnt quick fit or anything, was just my regular garage. I really think hes tried to get some money out of me, cos the failure items are really iffy. such as handbrake efficeincy, hes said its at 15%, failure is 16%, and yet the handbrake works well, even on steep hills.

anyway, got a welder coming, hoping he can do the other bits as well then its off to a council MOT station.

Unless they have changed the law (more than possible) You are allowed to drive the vehicle to a place of repair and thereis no limitation on millage.

You are also allowed to drive to an Mot station. The 2 do not need to be the same place

Your vehicle must be insured

It does not need to be taxed

There are caveat's but not worth going into here

Book it in somewhere, anywhere including your mate who has a driveway and a welder, and drive it there. Go ready armed with a name and a phone nmber in case you get sopped an plod wants proof. ( some jobsworth may well check) and book it in on registration number

One thing. If you book it in for an MOT and get stopped on route be sure to attend because if checked and you have cancelled after a stop check you can still be busted although unlikly

Thanks Vatco, what you have said is what I thought, and what I have been reading, pretty much says that also on the MOT failure sheet! When the welding is done, it will be booked directly in with a Council Test centre!

well, surprise surprise I didnt get my car looked at and welded yesterday. Was a bad start. My mate was late due to a problem with his washing machine, but we cracked on, went to petrol station got a jerry full of diesel, chucked that in and were ready to go but the bloke texted saying he couldnt do it, maybe next week! nice.

so now I think I am jinxed BUT, I have a a plan, and that plan will be made real on Saturday....

bloody hell mate you are jinxed, so whats the plan for saturday then, :nenau:doh

well...not sure I want to say, but lets just say me and my mate will be sorting it, and it wont fail the mot on sills.:thumb2

you see we had a right good look. we found that the sills in fact are not rusted, its the body work around the sill, which is seperate, that has rusted.
