If your front wheels were not spinning same as the back you were not in 4 wheel drive, simples, if you have auto hubs are they working? if manuals did you lock them first, you should have flown up that in 4x4, Rick
Can't say I have much experience in snow but plenty in loose sand - sand dunes etc.We would use a VW beach buggy (no 4wd there) but the only way up was zig zag unless too steep.Let the air out of the tires a bit to put more surface on the snow/mud.??This helps a great deal on loose sand but again not sure about snow etc.The other thing was to select a gear at the bottom and stay in it all the way up.ie: start in 1st on the level, change quickly to second and stay there to the top,no fiddeling about.Hope this is of use.Good luck.
zig zag and bunches of loud pedal

So here's the latest on the slippery uphill saga. Got up to the field today. Snow and ice all gone, ground thawed out and very wet and slippy. Went straight up the hill in 4L in 2nd gear. I could feel a bit slip and wheels digging a bit in spots but it kept moving along nice and steady. So maybe the ground was frozen underneath the surface last time and tires couldn't cut in for grip. :nenau :nenau
i used to do bit of off roading with my other motor toyota hilux surf 3.0 with the click of a button i put it in diff lock which ment when the going gets really tough all 4 are spinning often at slow pace enough to make forward traction. took mine through north york moors mud half way up the doors & pressure reduced in the tyres anything to gain traction it worked never needed a winch luckily never got it bogged down:lol im little dissapointed that the terrano11 has no diff lock allowing wheel spin to happen more frequent cos of only 2 wheels driving... sold it cos it would only achieve 18-20 mpg :doh the terrano is lot more fuel friendly dont do any off roading now it just pulls the van :lol
Who told you it has no difflock??????
