when in the toyota i used to select 4 wheel drive then you had small pic on dash red line indicates to 4 wheels then when u put diff lock on it had a yellow line that indicated 4 wheels locked only for mud not for road as it would wind up the diff. on my terrano11 2.7 all i can find is 4h & 4L so where is the diff lock ?

It has a limited slip diff so it won't need a diff lock the rear diff in the surf had an open diff like u find in most road cars so when u need both wheels at the back to turn u push the diff lock button but u don't need to do that on the trannro as it has a lsd at the back :thumbs

Gaining traction

I used to go off roading few yrs back when i had my toyota hilux surf 3.0 . Good rubber pressures dropped anything to gain touch more grip . I found the toyota just kept on going when the going gets tuff . It had diff lock which all 4 wheels are spinning same time which often kept enough forward momentum to get free . The terrano doesnt have this diff lock making it much easier for 2 wheels to break out into a spin loss of traction when your in the boggy . I use my terrano for pulling the caravan does it great fuel cons really good unlike the toyota 18 20 mpg very poor

ok ive never taken my terrano off road so i cant speculate what there like but seen odd footage on you tube many seem 2 break out in 2 wheel spin on small gradients but suppose these hills in real life could be much steeper than they look on film

Chances are the hilux had just a centre diff lock for the transfer box (not axle locks)

The terrano has no transfer box diff, so no need for a diff lock :thumbs
