If your front wheels were not spinning same as the back you were not in 4 wheel drive, simples, if you have auto hubs are they working? if manuals did you lock them first, you should have flown up that in 4x4, Rick

I was wondering about that. It may be that the passanger side front wheel was spinning but the drivers side was not. Definately in 4wd though. Have auto hubs and they do seem to be working on less slippy ground but will have to check them.

Zig Zag

Can't say I have much experience in snow but plenty in loose sand - sand dunes etc.We would use a VW beach buggy (no 4wd there) but the only way up was zig zag unless too steep.Let the air out of the tires a bit to put more surface on the snow/mud.??This helps a great deal on loose sand but again not sure about snow etc.The other thing was to select a gear at the bottom and stay in it all the way up.ie: start in 1st on the level, change quickly to second and stay there to the top,no fiddeling about.Hope this is of use.Good luck.

The ground was frozen yesterday so would have gotten up the hill without too much bother. If its slippery again on Saturday I'll try the zig zag suggestions then. The staying in a lower gear, 2nd, didn't work on my original runs at it.

So here's the latest on the slippery uphill saga. Got up to the field today. Snow and ice all gone, ground thawed out and very wet and slippy. Went straight up the hill in 4L in 2nd gear. I could feel a bit slip and wheels digging a bit in spots but it kept moving along nice and steady. So maybe the ground was frozen underneath the surface last time and tires couldn't cut in for grip. :nenau :nenau

up hill

zig zag and bunches of loud pedal

Good stuff - I maintain that 4WD low is not as bad as people say - it might apply more torque bit everything happens at 50% of the revs, so more likely to maintain movement.:thumb2

i haven't read all the psots so bear with me!

but a fe days ago i had a zero tractioin moment when off road in 4x4 in compacted snow/ice, wheel spin no movement at all! the 4x4 light was on, fixed hubs so theoretically no doubt about 4x4 engement!

I changed to 2wd and baclk to 4wd and bingo! it was off, the problem was despit the green light no 4wd, and your syptoms do sound like you were in 2wd so maybe try de-selecting driving forward or back a couple of yards, re-selecting and have another go! I think somtimes if you don't engage 4x4 at the right speed with your wheels in a dead straight line it may not engage properly!

i used to do bit of off roading with my other motor toyota hilux surf 3.0 with the click of a button i put it in diff lock which ment when the going gets really tough all 4 are spinning often at slow pace enough to make forward traction. took mine through north york moors mud half way up the doors & pressure reduced in the tyres anything to gain traction it worked never needed a winch luckily never got it bogged down:lol im little dissapointed that the terrano11 has no diff lock allowing wheel spin to happen more frequent cos of only 2 wheels driving... sold it cos it would only achieve 18-20 mpg :doh the terrano is lot more fuel friendly dont do any off roading now it just pulls the van :lol

Yes but the Terrano has a Limited Slip Diff which as long as it has the correct oil, will perform really well in the slippy stuff.:thumb2

i used to do loads off roading in the past in a toyota hilux surf 3.0 i found incredible machine off road ,i wouldnt dream taking my terrano on the same course up hill sections had me pinned to the seat down hill i almost thought its gonna cartwheel arse over tit !. i went through what sempt like forest section mud & water coming up the bonnet :doh never once did i get it stuck or maybe i was very lucky main thing is kept forward motion up onto the dry paths :lol little bit dissapointed in the terrano is it has no diff lock unlike the toyota big advantage constantly it had 4 wheels spinning on the rough sections enough to creep u outta trouble but with the terrano when 2 wheels start to spin your going nowhere . i dont off road now as i enjoy my terrano pulling the caravan which it does really well :thumbs

Surf only had diff lock at the back as an option, so you'll still only have 3 wheel drive actually. The terrano will do the same just with LSD instead of locker:thumbs
I had a Surf when I first started off roading and now absolutely disagree with you big time on your observation. The surf is much heavier than the terrano and has less power ( except the 3.0) and I'll take my maverick anywhere :p

Gaining traction

I used to go off roading few yrs back when i had my toyota hilux surf 3.0 . Good rubber pressures dropped anything to gain touch more grip . I found the toyota just kept on going when the going gets tuff . It had diff lock which all 4 wheels are spinning same time which often kept enough forward momentum to get free . The terrano doesnt have this diff lock making it much easier for 2 wheels to break out into a spin loss of traction when your in the boggy . I use my terrano for pulling the caravan does it great fuel cons really good unlike the toyota 18 20 mpg very poor

Who told you it has no difflock??????

when in the toyota i used to select 4 wheel drive then you had small pic on dash red line indicates to 4 wheels then when u put diff lock on it had a yellow line that indicated 4 wheels locked only for mud not for road as it would wind up the diff. on my terrano11 2.7 all i can find is 4h & 4L so where is the diff lock ?
