I'm hoping to check and adjust my valve clearences on Saturday.

This might be a daft question however, how do I tell when the engine is at top dead centre?

Will the download in the links section work with my 99 T2 2.7 TDI? Are the clearences the same?

Does it not tell you in the download? use this link, its a faster one...and I don't know of any reason why the clearances should be different TBH....as I said before, its pretty much only the ancilliaries and feeds to the ECM that have changed over the years...

In fact it says....

1. Remove the following parts.
I Intercooler cover
I Intercooler
I Rocker cover
2. Set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC.
1) Rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise, and align the TDC mark
of the crankshaft pulley with the timing indicator of the TDC
sensor bracket.

Probably more obvious when you actually see it....

Easiest way to make sure you cover all bases is go to the IDX section at the above link....the alphabetical index...there are two locations with info about valve clearances....

Cheers

I think I'll have a crack at this on Saturday- providing the weathers ok!

Well tried to do this on Saturday.

I cant get the Rocker cover off, seems well glued in place (and I had removed all of the bolts).

Tried a little light levering however looked like I was just going to damage the edge of the cover.

Any suggestions ?

Percussive engineering technique?

Seriously no idea, never taken it off......someone else might though, but if someones used gasket seal it might just be well stuck...got a wooden mallet to give it a few belts with?

Normally they come off really easy as they are fitted with a good rubber gasket that you can reuse. Sounds like some one has been out with the RVT silicone and stuck it down:doh, you will have to try and prise it off with a couple of screwdrivers, take care you don’t deform it though.
