Hi again folks guess what theres somthing else wrong with me Mistral!Went out in it today and i have had an electrical failure,i have lost all the dash lights,stereo,indicators,interior light,fan the lot cant even get it out of park without using the manual overide or get the key out the ignition :doh . I have still got headlights and tail lights and it still starts off the key. I have checked the battery its reading 12.8v but is dropping after every start up as the alternators not working either! I have checked every fuse i can see both visually and with the multi meter i have checked all the earths that i can see aswell and they all seem fine am i missing somthing simple i just dont know what to do next oh i also checked the battery terminals and they seem fine.Im getting pretty fed up with this truck now there always seems to be somthing wrong with it anybody have any ideas?

Cheers

Stuart.

blimey, not good. you checked the fuses inside the cabin and the engine bay?

are the clamps in good condition, you may have to remove to look underneath-check for cracks.

are those earth cables definately ok? not rusted away underneath the wire where it rubs the inner wing?

It does sound like a failed fuse or two, but have you had the alternator checked?

Yeah checked all fuses i can see in engine bay and dash panel the alternator is only two months old i dont think thats the prob because even if it wasnt working i should still have electrics as the battery still has a charge?As for the terminals they have seen better days and will replace them but they are still ok i mean i was driving for about twenty minutes every thing fine then the stereo went off thats when i noticed that every thing else had shit the bed aswell i remember looking at the volt gauge aswell not long before it happend and it was at 14.6 so it was all good one minute and not the next :confused: :confused: :confused:

Ignition key switch failure:augie
When you've started the truck, carefully turn the key back a bit, as if to switch off. That'll fix it, as you've more than likely got the old burnt out switch problem:doh
Dont panic it's easy to fix:thumbs
Let us know how you get on:D

My first thought was the ignition switch, however you say the interior light was off as well, this is normally live all the time, and you can normally leave this switched on when you leave and lock the vehicle.

So if this is true, then it is from the battery that you need to check, there are several leads on the Positive terminal that you need to check, at both ends, not just the main cable.
It could also be an earth from the battery, or engine to bodywork, check all connections.
Doesn't seem too difficult to fault find as if you say the interior light was on and is now off, it shouldn't be a fuse.

I hope this helps you to focus on the problem.
Best regards, Rustic

OOh that would be good if it was just the switch il have to double check that interior light aswell as the switch for that on the drivers door is a bit tempremental at times il report back in a bit guys :thumb2

Yeah i did see that but all my fuses in there seem to be fine i took them out and visualy inspected them and checked the continuity with the multimeter just to be sure

Right just been out to have a fiddle with her :naughty and no joy with the ignition and the interior light is dead aswell so what next? Going to Norway again on thursday so prob wont be able to do much with it till i get back.

Bugger:doh
I seem to remember there's a master fuse on these trucks somewhere, maybe 60 amp jobbie:augie
Location er um maybe engine bay I think:confused:
Cue Zippy/Briggie workshop emanuel please:sly

Ok that would make sense maybe as everythings dead as a dodo apart from head lights tail lights and starter motor as far as i can see but then why would that just blow?

Mistral fuse allocations:
I have now added a letter to the end of each fuse group:
I = Ignition
B= Battery
A = Accessory
So I would guess there is a "big" fuse somewhere under the hood for each of these groups.

Top row, left to right
1) Meter I
2) Signal turn - Indicators I
3) - I
4) Stop lamp B
5) Horn B
6) Interior light (room light) B
7) Hazzard lamp B
8) Fog lamp B
9) - B
10) Tail lamp B

12) left headlamp B
13) right headlamp B

Bottom row, left to right

Cheers i have had a look at the diagrams but im no closer to knowing what to do as im hopeless with electrics before it happend i was doing some mild offroading just down dirt tracks to the river there was alot of mud and the wheel arches are filthy with thick mud also i bellied it a wee bit but i had a look and all that touched was the rear diff and the front sump guard could this have anything to do with my loss of power?

As previously mentioned there will be a fuse somewhere under the bonnet & not too far from the battery .
This could well be the common culprit here. I have no idea what it looks like but Nissan blurb refers to it as a "fuseable link".

Ok just been out for a look with a fresh head so to speak and the only thing I have discoverd is that when I turn on the ignition there is a click and then a constant rattle sound like a relay is switching on and off I'm pretty sure that whatever is making the noise is buried under the engine somewhere and I can't for the life of me locate where it is I'm thinking it's between the bulk head and the back of the engine block so went to put it up the ramps but can't start it as the glow plugs are not working either?

Ah i have had this out as i wonderd what it was if its the same thing im thinking of it is just a plastic plug with a wire coming out the top and going back in the bottom i testd this for continuity with the multi meter and got no beep im gonna investigat this further :thumb2 god i love this site hope that its the culprit but then if it is why has it gone pop?

Cunning isn't it.... looks like you have found your problem then, a fuse neatly disguised a piece of wire!
Why it went is a whole separate issue... just dont replace it with anything to heavy - in case!
Probably a wire chaffing on the chassis or something similar - be a pig to find!!!
