A while ago I posted about my Terrano using water. No external signs so assumed it was head gasket. Well it wasn't it was a cracked head

So I now have a new head being built up to go on which is not cheap.

The other problem I had was an oil leak. This has been traced to a porous sump. Does anyone know if this is a common problem on the ZD30 engine (2004). I am being quoted £360 for a new one and that is unfitted so am going to have to go down the second hand route. Don't want to buy second hand though if all are knackered at that age.

Anybody got a spare sump for sale.:) I can't remember what the car looks like I haven't seen it for so long!!!:doh

Yep this is a problem with the 3.0

But was more prevalent in the patrol, supposed to be sorted in Terrano ...

Overfuelling and boost spikes cause it to run hot cracking the head

I understood that the engine is the same as the Patrol, BUT will the sump be the same, as there are lots of bits of car under the engine, that might require a different shape sump?
Just thinking...:nenau

There are 3 Terrano 3.0 breaking on ebay, BUT I would expect they will be looking to sell the complete engine. Have you seen the price for a 9 year old engine... over 1 k

What you need is to be able to contact anyone who has bought a replacement engine and can get some money back from selling bits off their old engine.:nenau

In the old days of ebay you could contact buyers of completed transactions, but not anymore... OR can you? Possibly through the seller.:naughty

Just another thought...

I have known people to weld plates onto the old sump.
Good luck.

i had a porus sump on my old 2.7 tdi.
took it off and had it plated up at work.pain in the ass to get off with the engine in situ.
a guy i know with the same problem tacked a plate on the sump with instant gasket slapped on the back of it.bit of a bodge but it worked for him until he could get a good relacement.

Have found someone who has a sump off a 3 litre that he is scrapping the engine on. Top end of the engine has gone so he is breaking it down and replacing it with a 2.7L. Used rustics idea of a cheeky Ebay contact.

He says sump has a couple of scabs on it and is sending photo.

I might get a plate welded on my old one and sell it as reconditioned!!!

Is the overfueling and boost spikes caused by an ECU problem???

My 3.0 sump look a bit scabby last year so I took the plunge and removed the scabs, wire brushed the rest of the rust off and painted/waxed. I will repeat this year.

Many year ago my father had a transit van (1600 petrol) that developed several rust holes on the sump. After removing the sump and cleaing with an angle grinder mounted wire brush I was able to fill the holes in with tin/lead solder and some fairly agressive flux using a 150/200W electric soldering iron from work. Sump lasted several more years till the tin worm got the rest of the bodywork.

It may be possible to do the work with the sump on the car if the holes are not too big and at the bottom of the sump. I have a big (and I mean big) 30 year old 250W soldering iron I could lend you if you fancy a go.

Hi

Thanks for the offer of the soldering iron. I think I am going to get a second hand sump and clean and prepare it before giving it to the garage to fit. The job is a bit of a pig by all accounts and easier with the engine lifted. Might also then sort old sump as a spare or sell it on.

I can't believe that you would design something that is so vital to be so thin.

I never had any problems with my Land Rover sumps rusting out they always had a good layer of oil from engine leaks.........

New Sumps for Old

Well The quote for a new sump for the Terrano from Nissan was about £500 :lol

So decided to get a second hand one. They are a bit like hens teeth but found one for a hundred quiid that just had a light bit of surface rust. So it was out the the trusty dremel over the weekend to take evrything back to metal. Then two coats of primer and two coats of hammerite.

Hoping to have car back on the road next week as its been a looooong time without it.

Bloody strange

I gave my sump a good dose of Bilt hamber under body wax when I was under there the other day.

Will have a look at why the pictures cannot be accessed. I am a fully paid up member so don't think it is that.

I am waiting with interest to have a good look at the sump when it is taken off my Terrano. I suspect the leak is from around the seams which do seem a bit vulnerable.
