How old was your Rangie? (were the major faults all on one or across the collection?) the build quality seems to vary year to year. Something around the P to W reg I wouldnt have touched in my worst nightmares but the ones that aren now around 4 year old seem to fair better :nenau I dont know. All info cheerfully appreciated :thumb2

2003 TD6 Vogue... Awesome car.. just the cost over the last 18 months that got the better of it. To have it mint for our next trip (Caravanning down to the South of France) I had another £1200 to look forwards to spending so I cut my losses. That was looking at a couple of tyres, suspension compressor, steering wheel adjustment motor, MOT and service... I'd rather spend that £1200 on a newer motor.. just wish I'd come to that way of thinking before I committed £2980 to a total recondition of the gearbox  With a new model around the corner to I jumped before the values plummeted. The other major expense £1100 for 5x injectors was again belt and braces approach after one injector failed on us ,.. sort of a slow lingering death.. all the way down Calais.. limped to Lake Como Italy where they diagnosed the iffy injector.. then as we couldn't wait for repair we eventually conken-outten in Strasbourg.. that was an adventure I'll tell you. Made a good freind during that breakdown and an unexpected injection of culture at Strasbourg municipal camp site.. anyway I digress... back to your choice of car..

What about a Freelander 2?

Interesting stuff :thumb2

I'd probably be looking in the 4/5 yr old area for Rangie diesel sports . Im not sure at the mo what the reliability rating is on those.

On the other hand for that I could get a superb G Cherokee diesel.

Freelander not on my list, mainly because it falls into the xtrail type bracket where its exerting max effort on the van whereas a Rangie/Grand Cherokee would be "what van?" :lol:lol.

gather rr sport has a 3500 kg trailer weight, was test tow in total off road.

had an ifor with a jacked up cherokee as ballast, said didnt know was there!

think that was 2.7 v6 td version. can post it you if like.

the people i do work for run a rangerover prob 3 years old now, its petrol so not even worth talking mpg lol.
or reliability for that matter , its a rangerover. he is always saying things drop off from inside , but he always drives to work in it, so it must start ok .

his son has a disco 3 or 4 anyway its about 2 years old ...is it deisel, and chipped to fu*ck. and bloody loves it. he says its a world away from the other landies he has had, both in comfort and toys and he says he has it turned up so much its gotta be a strong engine,
his daughter has special needs and to keep her entertained he has fitted all the in car entertainment sat tv, full in car entertainment incl 4 small monitors and a larger on in the roof lining . loads of speekers and stuff. having pulled most of the interior out and re fitted he said it was easy as the fittings seemd to click back in as you want them to and not snap or break
the upholstery seems to fair well you know the seats and plastic trim often gets coke or chocolate thrown into it or the odd kicking . even the carpets (his cleaner informs him ;)) cleans up easily around the dog
drives like a car and pulls like a train was his words , its a great tool and has all the kit.

my only worry is with the loss of axels, i cant see landrovers or rangerovers being of any use to anyone once they have passed that luxury car status so re sale will plummet

other cars he has had recently

audi Q7
bmw X5 i think it is (ghastly thing )
audi RS4

of them all he drives his disco and loves it

but that dont come anywhere near his new purchase

VW carravelle new shape top of the range 45k i think but he probably got big big discount on that to get it to 45.

its got everything and more . even the sliding doors open remotely proper limo inside too

oh and on the mpg thing. we was having a joke in his kitchen the other day and we worked out that as he had only covered less than 4 thousand miles over 2.5 years in the rs4 the money he lost in px for the caravelle.
his pounds per mile on depreciation was in the region of £4.80 per mile before petrol, tax or insurance .

personally id keep the jeep, its got a few more years of status about it . invest your 20k

or buy a camper van.
like you said your retiring soon and no spring chicken :D:D:D and why drag a tin tent about with all the setting up etc do you need all the hassle ? camper van is simple pull up and pop the kettle on lot easier to get down little lanes exploring too.

as they dont make the t2/mistral anymore .... i guess if i had 20k to spend on another car ..... id get a skoda yeti ( dont laff please :augie )

cheeky foker :lol:lol

Can I point out im still well on the youthful side of 50 ;) and definitely not old enough for a camper van. Its those lethargic gits that hold me up :naughty:naughty

since when is 59 "the youthful side of 50"?

:lol:lol:lol

I sit comfortably knowing youre wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead.

But managing well :thumb2

gotta admit, paullllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyy is pretty fit for his age

I'm being serious now Dave - why not consider something off the wall rather than spend stupid money on a newer car that will just dribble away in depreciation....why not get yourself a convertible, or an old Landy or some kind of classic that you can feck off and have a bit of fun in when Debs is working?

Get a copy of Practical Classics - you'd be surprised what you can get that is cheap to buy, cheap to run, classic insurance, no VED and minimal depreciation if any......

I agree, I couldn't spend that much cash and let it sit and waste away on the drive, it would be like buying a hole in your pocket.

one of the options is to keep the jeep and get some play money spent on

You could do worse. But plenty of cheaper alternatives. At your age a Morris Minor convertible is more appropriate :lol

Seriously, should be a £5-8k project max really. And you need to fit your faithful companion into it as well.

...and occasionally the wife* too.

(* on which point if she's reading The Redheads outbursts on FB she'll be pi55ing herself at my expense I've no doubt!:doh).

the one car i have always wanted since i was a kid is an aston. ironically remember reading a test in autocar where the v8 vantage was listed as 20k and my dad saying that was an amazing amount of money and god help us when normal cars cost that much :D

very tempting..........................

Am now wrestling with a similar dilemna, I need to move from two cars to a single vehicle when I retire in July. Wife has a Peugeot 207,and I have a 3.0 autobox Terrano, and we tow a 1.6 tonne laden caravan. Terrano is too expensive to travel all the miles we do visiting kids and family, but remains a tremendous towcar. The 207 is not capable of towing much more than a trailer tent, although it currently averages circa 50mpg as a runaround.
I am looking for a single vehicle to replace both. I would ideally like to stay with a 4x4 that can return economical mpg. At the moment I am thinking a Nissan X Trail, but there are so many other good motors in this sector that I am going dizzy with the different choices.Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Mike.p

Dont forget the 85% car to van weight Xtrail int enough

Isnt the xtrail diesel good for 2 tonnes ?

dont forget the 85% is only advisory. Youve got trucks like the Trolls, G cherokees & discos that weigh just over 2 tonnes but can haul 3.5 :thumb2
